Hi I'm Ilene Torgerson

I grew up in Utah. I'm a Mormon. I retired last May from teaching school.

About Me

I'm a mother and grandmother. I have a wonderful family and spending time with them is my favorite thing to do. I taught school for 26 years and loved teaching children to read. I love to crochet, read, learn, and garden.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born of goodly parents that taught me the gospel of Jesus Christ. I was baptized into the Mormon Church when I was eight years old, but that's not why I'm a Mormon. As I grew up, I attended church and I remember I always believed, but when I was about nineteen years old, I went through a heart wrenching break-up with a young man I was in love with. I felt lost and alone and I really started praying for help and guidance. The Lord helped me through that experience and I knew He was real and that he loved me. I read the scriptures more carefully, praying and seeking to gain a strong testimony of them. I felt the Spirit bear witness to me of their truthfulness. I saw the Lord's hand in my life and knew the Gospel is true. In time, I married a wonderful man, who loves the Lord, and we've been blessed with incredible children. We taught our children the Gospel, to pray and receive answers to their prayers. We felt the Spirit guide our family and my testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ has grown stronger and stronger. Have I made mistakes? Of course, everyone does, but the Savior blesses us through the Atonement to repent and be forgiven. That process has also strengthened my testimony. The Gospel of Jesus Christ means everything to me. Jesus Christ gave His life for me to have the opportunity to return home to live with my Heavenly Father. I want to give my life to build His Kingdom and show Him the love I have for Him and His children.

How I live my faith

I love the Lord and I'm so grateful to pray and receive answers to my prayers. I have tried to show my love for Jesus Christ by serving His children. I love to teach the gospel and have been a teacher in both Sunday School and in our youth and women's organizations. I have worked in leadership positions in these same organizations and have felt the Lord's Spirit direct me as I've worked with others to organize events and create activities to bless the lives of others. I've been a visiting teacher for over 40 years and have loved to visit my neighbors and strengthen their testimonies of Jesus Christ. The most important thing I've tried to do with my life is to share my love of Jesus Christ with my precious family. I'm so grateful for the way the Spirit of the Lord has blessed each of our children with a testimony of the gospel, and that they are trying to live Christlike lives and be good parents, neighbors, and citizens of our country.

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Ilene Torgerson
The Atonement of Jesus Christ is His gift to all mankind that makes it possible for us to return to and live with our Heavenly Father when this life is over. Each of us make many mistakes, or commit sins, during our lives. Since no unclean thing can enter God's presence and our sinning has made us very unclean, we would be unclean and unfit to return to live with our Father in Heaven again. Jesus Christ, as the only sinless person to ever live, through some process unknown to us but very real, suffered for our sins, paying the price for them, and thus allowing us, through repentance, to become clean again and worthy to enter our Heavenly Father's presence. God be praised for sending His loving, giving Son, who loved us so much that He would suffer and die so we could live eternally. I love Jesus Christ and am so grateful for Him! Show more Show less
