Hi I'm Jerry

I was born and lived in California for 75 years. I am a retired Registered Professional Forester. I joined the church at age 35.

About Me

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles county California and was the first in my family to graduate from college. I attended the University of California at Berkeley and earned a BS degree in Forest Management. As a child my dad would take us camping into the forest every year. We could get away from the hustle and turmoil of big city life for at least a few days each year. I learned to love nature and the forests from these trips. I used to go fishing alot but haven't done much in my old age. Traveling and seeing the wonders of nature are some of my favorite things to do. I enjoy spending time with my 3 children and 10 grandchildren. Watching films, documentaries, and shows with nature and wildlife are also high on my to do list. Family is important to me and we adopted a son after we thought our family was completed. He has blessed us with 5 grandchildren. I lost my eternal wife to a rare form of cancer after almost 48 years of marriage. I recently remarried a fine lady who had also lost her eternal spouse. We hope to live out the balance of our lives together.

Why I am a Mormon

At age 35 I became interested in the teachings of the church. My wife had a spiritual experience and invited the missionaries to teach her about the church. I was curious and really didn't know anything about the church prior to their coming to teach us so I listened to the discussions with my wife. I read the Book of Mormon and prayed to know if it and the church were true. I eventually received a testimony for myself and was baptized. One of the things that appealed to me was the teachings on becoming an eternal family. Since joining the church I have done a lot of genealogy research to find my ancestors. The plan of salvation allows even those who have already died to receive eternal blessings. It is reassuring to know that our loving Heavenly Father has provided a way for us to be a part of His eternal family, and for us to be able to return back to His presence again. I am also very thankful for His son Jesus Christ and the atonement He made for all of us.

How I live my faith

Over the years since joining the church I have served in various capacities in my community. As an amateur radio operator, I helped at community events and emergency incidents. I volunteered as a driver for the Veterans administration and was active with my local county sheriffs department for several years. Using my family history experience, I volunteered at a local family history library. I served a year as a full time missionary in the Salt Lake City genealogy library in 2001 and 2 years as a live at home missionary serving in the Sacramento California family search center.
