Hi I'm Garth

I'm a physicist, a computer scientist and a Mormon. I believe in Jesus Christ.

About Me

I am a scientist. I have studied physics and computer science all my life. I love the understanding that comes through applying rigorous methods to understand the world around me. I am awestruck by the wonderful world we live in, and the beauties around us. I love to hike and camp and spend time outdoors. I also love working with youth. It is great to help youth to develop and to understand their potential.

Why I am a Mormon

As a youth I struggled with my faith. Many scientists have difficulty reconciling their work with faith in God. However, I have many times felt the influence of God in my life, whether at home or in my work. I choose to remember these moments and put my faith in Him. This faith has changed my life and given my family direction and strength. I am so grateful for the changes that God has made in my life and that of my family. I love the Bible. The stories of Christ's life and teachings reach into my heart and resonate truth. I love the simplicity and clarity of the Book of Mark. The Gospel of John provides insight to deeper spiritual feelings and knowledge. Likewise, I love the Book of Mormon. Nowhere else do I find teachings that are so clear on the atonement of Christ. Here I can read examples of real people (like the people of Alma), who struggled with real challenges and were strengthened and enlightened as they put their trust in the Savior. And, I see lives that change. My own life is not perfect. I struggle to communicate with family members and others. I don't always have a "pure heart". I struggle with selfishness. However, as I apply the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I can see change and improvement in my own life. Some of that change is worked out as I serve in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Each time I am "called" to serve, I find new ways that God is working with me to help me learn to be unselfish and to serve with love. I have felt His love for His children, and it humbles me and makes me want to share in that love.

How I live my faith

I love learning and knowledge. Understanding the world around me brings me joy and satisfaction. The Book of Mormon teaches that "all things testify that there is a Creator." I truly believe this. I love my community, and consider service within the community to be important. For years this has meant service to the neighborhood where I live. I'm currently the secretary of the home owners association. I have had many callings with the church. Many of these involve working and teaching the young men. I've served as a scoutmaster several times, and now work with the boy scout district helping to train and support various units. Whether with Boy Scouts or teaching on Sundays, we help young men to grow and learn. I love the challenge of camping and hiking the mountains, and I especially find joy in sharing this with my sons and daughters and with other youth. Service in the church has helped me grow. Currently I am in a position that requires leadership and public speaking. This has always been a source of anxiety to me, but in the church calling I have felt God's help as learn to complete this work.
