Hi I'm Emmy Burton

I am a ukulele playing half chinese Canadian, I love to sing in the car, I love to travel, I am a photographer and I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am the oldest of 5 kids. I love cheesecake & creme brûlée. I love being a photographer because it means I get to capture people in their most raw and true form. I love superhero movies and mysteries. I was born in Alberta and am proud to call myself a Canadian. I graduated high school in 2016 and am currently preparing to serve a full time mission in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area.

Why I am a Mormon

Unlike some Mormons, I grew up raised in this religion. My whole life I've been surrounded by friends and family members who believed the same thing I did and so that was never really a struggle for me. I think the main reasons I chose to stay an active part of the LDS church can be traced back to the simple but profound truths I believe. Decades ago 3 of my 4 grandparents were contacted by missionaries who offered a message of peace and love. They taught that we have a loving and ever-present God in heaven who wants to be part of our lives. We have a Savior who willingly offered his life so that we might be forgiven of our past mistakes and one day return to live with him and our families forever. As these ideas were passed down to me I used my agency, my ability to choose, that these were truths I also believed and deemed important in my life. The immense comfort I have experienced first hand from the knowledge that we are never alone or forgotten has changed my life. Knowing that if I pray with a sincere desire to change and better myself I may be forgiven gives me hope and motivation to repent. I have come to know that our Heavenly Father truly does hear and answer our prayers, even the ones we say in our hearts. He has a grand plan for us and each of us as children of God have been blessed with divine potential. I am a mormon because I have prayed to know if these things are true and the answer came back as "yes" over and over again.

How I live my faith

My faith is a 24/7 commitment. During the week I strive to emulate Christ' genuine example of love. I work to consciously think of how I am treating other people and what kind of words I am using. I've found that as I look for opportunities to serve others by doing simple things like offering to open the door for a grandma with a walker or smiling at those I pass on the street that I'm in a much better mood. As I focus more on being kind and sincere I've become a better person and it's not a hard thing to do. Complementing someone or bringing them a slice of cake can make all the difference and is so easy. On Sunday's I spend 3 hours at church studying the life of Christ and then teaching the 4 year old kids. I teach what I believe and that is that they - just like me and you- too can be like our Savior Jesus Christ on a daily basis by being kind, humble, obedient and engaging in service.

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Emmy Burton
As a 19 year old I've had a lot of people ask what could possibly make me want to postpone school and possible relationships to move away from my family and live with people I've never met for the next 18 months of my life. Why would I choose to live out of a suitcase and only be allowed to email home once a week? The answer? A deep love for the gospel of Jesus Christ. In a few short months I will move to Pennsylvania to teach people about what I believe and the power of principles of faith and repentance. In it's simplest form, Mormon missionaries proselyte because we have felt and come to know of the power of God's love. We have studied the words and life of Christ our Savior and Redeemer and have allowed them to change our lives. At one time or another you will watch a good movie and then instinctively want to tell everyone else that they have to watch it because it was that good. This is the same way the gospel of Christ work within us. As we immerse ourselves in his teachings and allow the seed of faith to grow within us we also have that same desire to share this contagious feeling with those around us. Mormon missionaries offer a message of love and light and peace in a world desperately in need. Show more Show less
