Hi I'm John Winters

I grew up in a small town in Wyoming; then went to BYU and earned a Master's Degree in Space and Planetary Physics. I'm a Mormon!

About Me

I grew up in a small town in Wyoming, USA. After high school, I attended Brigham Young University and earned a master's degree in space and planetary physics. I met my future wife at that university. We married and have eight children and lots of grand-children and even some great-grand-children. My one and only full-time job was teaching physics and astronomy at a community college in Arizona for 40 years. I also love music and have sung in college and church choirs. I also play the large string bass and played in a small dance band/combo for almost 50 years. Hobbies, besides physics and astronomy, include: reading, computer programing, photography, gardening, dance band and hiking.

Why I am a Mormon

Even though I grew up in a Mormon family, I felt I needed to know for myself if there was a God and whether or not the Mormon faith was actually the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. While attending the university, I made it a matter of prayer and fasting. One night I went into a neighboring apple orchard and knelt in prayer. I received an overwhelming confirmation that there was a Heavenly Father and that Jesus Christ was his Son and Savior of the world. I also received confirmation that the Book of Mormon was indeed scripture and a second witness, in addition to the New Testament, of the divinity of Jesus Christ. My name is John and I'm a Mormon!

How I live my faith

As a young man, I served as a volunteer missionary for two and one-half years in the Samoan Islands. That was a great experience and helped solidify my faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ. While teaching college, I was asked to serve in a variety of assignments in my church congregation. One of these assignments was to serve as the bishop of the congregation in my community. The Mormon Church has a lay ministry where we receive no compensation for our service. After retiring from teaching college, my wife and I have served as missionaries in Germany, Malaysia and the Philippines. These were wonderful years where we learned to love the people in those diverse countries as we taught the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. As volunteer missionaries, we paid our own way including housing, food, utilities, travel expenses, etc.
