Hi I'm Gene

I was baptized in Vietnam. I studied agronomy at UW-Madison and BYU. We raised our family in Wisconsin. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was raised as an only child, though I have a sister who died when she was 6 months old. My parents were hard workers who believed in being self sufficient and in caring for and helping others. We did not have a lot in terms of worldly things but we had enough and when we looked around we could easily find those for whom life was more difficult. I attended a one room country school with eight grades and grew up loving agriculture. I had a small herd of Black Angus and enjoyed raising crops. My parents taught me how to work and instilled in me the need to gain an education. I played baseball in high school. I tried out in college but did not make the team. I met my wife in our church's single adult group. Our extended family has grown from 2 to 21 over the years. We had a u-pick strawberry, blueberry and raspberry operation until our 4 children started their careers. My career was in Seed Certification involving the inspection of seed production fields and managing a seed testing laboratory

Why I am a Mormon

I was baptized a Mormon while in Vietnam. I served in the army with a Mormon who patterned his life according to Gospel principles and was killed in combat. I questioned why a righteous man did not survive and wanted to better understand him and his faith. In the process of learning about the Mormon faith, I received my personal testimony that the fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored by the Savior through his prophet, Joseph Smith Jr. The gospel has given me the faith and strength that allows peace and understanding as we go through the good and difficult times of this temporal earthly life.

How I live my faith

I have been teaching and working with the youth in our church. I am now setting out for a full-time church mission with my wife for the next 23 months. I find great satisfaction in helping others and participating in service projects. Service helps me to understand the points of view from the standpoint of others.
