Hi I'm Sophie

Raised in the Sierra Nevada, I'm an outdoor girl through and through. I found this Gospel when I was twenty-one. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Raised in a small town in the foothills by the Sierra Nevada, I grew up needing to escape to the outdoors every now and again. I love skiing, camping, rifle shooting, and most of all: rock climbing. When I graduated high school, I moved to the central valley for college, where I've been studying education. During spring break in 2016, I took a train trip across the country. I love to travel and see what's out there, and so I stopped in Salt Lake City on my way to New York. It was in Temple Square that I found the Gospel, and learned about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now, just a year and a few months later, I'm getting ready to serve in the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a mormon because the sister missionaries I met in Temple Square were an inspirational example of compassion, strength, and integrity. I couldn't understand why they'd give up 18 months of their lives to be so far from home and family until I began to learn their message. At first it was the plan of salvation. I could be with my family forever, in perfect happiness and in the presence of my God and king. I'm a mormon because at first I exercised small amounts of faith. I read, prayed and kept an open heart. Pretty soon the blessings started coming, and they made me want to go further, know and progress more and more. I was blessed abundantly and could no longer doubt the truth. It was slow going until one day I just knew that I knew. I know Jesus Christ visited the people of the Americas. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, and translated the Book of Mormon. And I know the work we do in our holy temples is right and beautiful. That's why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

One of the greatest things about this church is it offers so many opportunities to serve. From harvesting grapes in our church vineyard to the jobs or callings we are given by our leaders, it's a pleasure to help out. My first calling was to make sure my ward got together to clean our building on Saturdays every third month. Pretty soon, I was upgraded to teach relief society, which is the group of women who meet during the third hour of church. I've loved sharing the words of our prophets and apostles with the young women in my ward. I stress out every time I plan a lesson, but it's worth it when it goes well. I also love going out with the missionaries to bring the gospel to those who haven't heard it yet. In a few days I'll be a missionary myself.
