Hi I'm Mary

I grew up in upstate New York. I am a Mormon. I am a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.

About Me

Hello. My name is Mary. I was born and raised in upstate New York. I came to Utah to attend college. Utah is now my home. I graduated from college with a BS degree in Social Work. As a career in social work I worked with people with various disabilities. I enjoyed working with people with disabilities. They taught me a lot about unconditional love. My hobbies and interest include reading, writing, cooking, swimming, doing crossword puzzles and watching professional football (NFL). My favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys.

Why I am a Mormon

On a cold wintery day in March when I was a teenager two missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ came to our home. At the time I lived in upstate New York. The missionaries invited us to church the next day (Sunday). One of my younger sisters, a younger brother and myself attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints with the missionaries. I had attended many different churches in my life. I always felt that something was missing. As I walked into the church building I felt something different. When I heard the hymns that were sung they were familiar to me even though I had never heard them before. Hearing these hymns touched some thing within me. My whole being was filled with some thing that I could not express or explain. I felt as if I had come home. For three weeks the missionaries taught us the gospel which began with the Joseph Smith story. The missionaries left a Book of Mormon with us and encouraged us to read it and to pray about it. As I read the Book of Mormon I prayed about the truthfulness of it. The first time I prayed about the Book of Mormon I knew it was true. I also knew that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and his mission was to restore the gospel to all mankind. I was baptized along with five of my siblings. My parents did not join the church at this time. My heart will always be full of gratitude for the missionaries who brought me the glorious gift of the gospel. Since my baptism I have had many witnesses from the Holy Ghost that the church is true and that it is the Lord's church, that the Book of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, and that we have a living prophet upon the earth today. Through studying the Book of Mormon I have come to personally know God (my Father in Heaven) and His son, Jesus Christ, my Savior and Redeemer. As I have experienced various challenges and trials in my life, my testimony has been an anchor, strength and an immeasurable blessing to me.

How I live my faith

I believe that faith is an action word therefore I live my faith on a daily basis. I have organized cancer and heart fund drives in my community. Living my faith daily brings peace and joy into my life. I find strength, comfort, peace and safety in keeping and living the commandments of God. The more I live my faith the closer I come to my Heavenly Father and to my Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. My church callings include greeting people as they come to church and teaching an adult Sunday School class. I teach lessons from the Bible, the Book of Mormon and other scriptures. I enjoy teaching because it strengthens my faith and increases my knowledge of gospel principles.

How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

I have come to know my Father in Heaven through the teachings of the Savior, through consistent daily study of the holy scriptures and by talking to Him through daily prayer. By keeping His commandments, by serving Him and through the power of the Holy Ghost I have come to know and become closer to my Father in Heaven and to my Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. I have a personal testimony of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I know that He died not only for all mankind but also for me. I know that He descended below all things so that he might know of the joys, pain, trials and sorrows I face in my life. This enables Him to know how to help me in my life. Knowing my Father in Heaven has brought a beautiful enduring peace into my life that I know only God can give. Show more Show less
