Hi I'm John Burton

"Ive grown up in the U.S. all my life. I am leaving on a mission to Brazil, Porto Alegre South this summer. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love to mountain bike, play basketball and volleyball. I am the second oldest of 4 children. Following my mission to Brazil I will attend college at BYU. I have actually had 2 surgeries to both of my shoulders which took me out of any chance at summer activities following my Junior Year, then cut my Basketball season short end of Senior year. However, I have learned patience, endurance, and faith from these experiences.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the church because I love my Lord and Savior and know of his love for me as well. I have gained a testimony that he truly did die and suffer for our sins so that we could repent and become pure like him again. I feel peace and joy when I live the gospel and know that you can't get this feeling anywhere else. Over the years I have also witnessed that the life of a mormon is full of clarity, understanding, (peace and joy again) and love for others. I love this gospel and cannot wait to be able to share it with the people of Brazil for two years.

How I live my faith

In my ward, I home teach two families. I also am a councilor to the bishop for my young men group. I get to help plan and prepare for upcoming activities as well as assign out and participate in many different jobs or opportunities for my age group.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

John Burton
The Word of Wisdom is a commandment from God about keeping our bodies and minds healthy and strong. Many things the Word of Wisdom councils us not to use such as Tobacco, Alcohol, coffee or tea as well as drugs are addictive substances that can inhibit our ability to fully control ourselves. It inhibits us from making clear logical choices. Show more Show less

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

John Burton
A testimony is a witness given to someone by the Holy Ghost. It is a foundation to which we cling in times of trials. It is our understanding of God and his love for us. It is what we hold to be true and know in our hearts. Show more Show less
