Hi I'm Steven

I grew up in St. George Utah. I build saddles that will last “until death do we part!” I am a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in St. George, Utah and have deep roots in Washington County. I have always lived in St. George, on the same block, different sides, for 73 years! “Where the summer sun spends the winter.” My wife and I have Horse Motel, called “Harmony Horse Haven,” where we board horses. I build saddles that will last “until death do we part!” Our marriage in the Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is for time and all eternity. We have been married for 51 years. We have seven children and 32 grandchildren.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up as a Mormon in St. George, Utah, but the foundation for my testimony is because of when I was a young boy and got lost, while riding a bike in Long Beach, California. My father and mother, brother and sister, and I went to California to visit an older sister from my Dad’s first wife, who died after child birth. I borrowed a bike and went for a ride. I soon found out that they don’t have square blocks in Long Beach, California! I got lost. I remembered my Dad and Mom telling me, if I ever needed help, I could pray and ask Heavenly Father for help. I needed help, so I stopped my bike and said a prayer that I could get back to Claudia and Cecil’s house. After praying, I saw a police officer pulling over where I was. He asked me if I needed help. I think I was crying. I told him I was lost and needed to get back to Claudia and Cecil’s house. He asked, “Cecil who?” I didn’t remember the last name. All I remembered Mom and Dad saying was Claudia and Cecil. He put the bike in his trunk and drove me to where Dad and Mom were sitting on the porch, visiting with Claudia and Cecil. I was still crying and told Dad I couldn’t remember Cecil’s last name. He said, holding his hands together, “just remember swinging gates.” Gates was their last name. And how did the police officer know that! I have known since then, that we have a Father in Heaven that hears and answers prayer. The story about young Joseph Smith receiving an answer to his prayer wasn’t hard for me to believe. I knew he was a prophet, and the church is true. I have had lots of prayers answered through out my life.

How I live my faith

I believe that this life is the time to prepare to meet God. I know that He loves us and wants us to be happy, and he has given us our free agency. I went to our Patriarch when I was 19 to see what he would tell me about going on a mission for our church. He told me "it was intended that I go." I had been dating my wife for three years before, but I went on my mission and was very successful. My wife waited, a great blessing to me and our future children. Now I am 73 years old and have never turned down a calling to serve in my church. I have served as Elder's Quorum President, finance clerk, counselor in the bishopric, counselor in the High Priest Group, nine years in the stake high council, six years as bishop of our ward, five years at the old folks home and in the stake Sunday School presidency. My wife and I are currently serving a mission together in the Nauvoo, Illinois Temple. I still build and repair saddle and run the horse motel. I have some black Angus cattle. I don't ever plan to retire. Our seven children and thirty-two grandchildren have been a great help to us so we can be in Nauvoo on our mission. I have always done my best to renew my covenants each Sunday going to church. Living the Gospel is not hard. Paying a full tithing to the Lord is a benefit bringing blessings. I know that Satan is alive and well and he hates us. He wants to tear down, discourage and destroy whatever he can, and he will if we let him. We have our free agency. We are each the Captain of our ship. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church on this earth.
