Hi I'm Karen

I am happily married, with a blended family of 5 children and 10 grandchildren. I like to sew and garden. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I was raised in the Midwest and learned to garden, sew, ride horse, shoot a bow, and fish. I have many interests today, such as artwork, cooking, genealogy and costuming. I was a historical costumer for about 30 years and provided costuming for reenactors around the world, theater, opera companies and movies. I still love to create new costumes and accessories. Steampunk is one of my favorite costuming genres. All of our children are grown and have families of their own. Having ten grandchildren, there are still many opportunities to use my sewing and costuming skills! My husband and I are currently working on renovating our 1850's house. We call it our life long project. If we live long enough, we may one day see it finished. It's challenging, but exciting, bringing an old house back to some semblance of its former self. We have found clues to what life must have been like in the decades past as we open walls or peak above ceilings. Bits of old wallpaper, a 1930's father's day card and even the knife that an electrician had dropped between the studs of an old wall have been discovered. It's part treasure hunt and part history lesson! I find great joy in learning new things and never tire of trying new projects to keep my mind busy and young.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the one true church on the earth today. I believe that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God, that the Gospel of Christ has been restored and that the Book of Mormon is true. The Holy Ghost has born witness to my spirit of the truth of all these things. I am a Mormon because a living prophet and apostles guide and council me through their testimonies, revelations and words from the Lord. I am a Mormon because I believe families were meant to be eternal, forever together living in the presence of our Heavenly Father and His son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. I am a Mormon because my Heavenly Father has given me free agency to choose between life and death, blessing and cursing. I choose a life filled with blessing. I testify that this is true, in the sacred name of my Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

How I live my faith

I have been called as a branch missionary. I love working with people and telling them about the restored gospel. Being a convert myself, I can relate to those who come from varied religious backgrounds. Sharing the love of our Savior and Heavenly Father is one of my greatest privileges. I enjoy being apart of the Relief Society. Providing help for others in need is satisfying and builds my faith. Fellow church members, missionaries and those investigating the restored gospel are welcomed to our home as an outreach of our own mission. Feeding people, both spiritually and temporally, brings me great joy! Even before I was a convert, I had a strong interest in family genealogy. Doing research seems to come naturally to me and I enjoy the "detective" work that it takes to uncover names, places, dates and familial relationships. When I joined the church I learned about the ordinances that could be done for our ancestors. The genealogy that I do now has greater purpose and is serious work for me. I am currently working with FamilySearch to become a genealogy helper for those who use the site.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Karen
The Word of Wisdom is a law of health. It encourages us to only put those things into our bodies that will help to build it up in strength and soundness. Eating properly, eating correct proportions and getting the nutrients that our bodies need keep us healthy. The Lord God has promised that if we will obey the Word of Wisdom, He will bless us with good health, wisdom and treasures of knowledge. We will have strength and stamina in times of trial.
