Hi I'm Sandy

I am a retired elementary school teacher, mother of five and grandmother of thirteen. I am a Mormon

About Me

I have raised four wonderful sons and a daughter who became both mentally and physically disabled at the age of twelve. I have thirteen amazing grandchildren who I don't see enough of because they all live so far away. I love to read Victorian novels for my "escape". I have a good sense of spacial relationships, love to work with color and I love to sew. I find a creative outlet for these in the art of quilting. I enjoy walks in the forest where I can smell the leaves cleaning the air for me.

Why I am a Mormon

As a child I was taken to Sunday School in a Protestant church and I am grateful for this early introduction to my Savior, Jesus Christ. Although my family were not regular attenders at any church I gravitated to any religious meeting when given the opportunity. When, at the age of fifteen, I was presented with the doctrines taught by missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I felt an immediate connection to the concepts presented. Specifically, when they taught me the doctrine of the Godhead I recognized truth that I had learned from my own study of the Bible but had not been taught in the Protestant church I was currently attending. My decision to be baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Through following this gospel I have been able to understand more clearly who my Savior is, what He has done for me and what I can do to draw closer to my Him. As I have faced many struggles, worries and disappointments throughout my life I have felt His unwavering support and love. As I look back over my life I can see His hand in directing it. He placed me in situations where I could learn about Him. He has put people in my path to guide me, to be positive examples for me and even to open doors of opportunity for me. I am ever so grateful for the presence of the Holy Ghost in my life and I know that He has protected me, prompted me and comforted me as I have tried my best to be obedient to God's commandments. I love the Scriptures. The Bible is more than a history and book of beautiful literature. It is a blueprint for a happy life. I love the Book of Mormon. It too is more than a history. It is a clear presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, a second witness of His divinity and also a vehicle for personal revelation. When I have a question and I prayerfully read this sacred book, I always find my answer within its pages.

How I live my faith

My service in the Church has been varied. I have taught children, youth and adults in various meetings. I have been an organizer for children, the youth and adult programs and activities. Although these have all been rewarding experiences my most treasured time for the past six years has been serving the patrons who come to the nearby Latter-day Saint temple.

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

I love to read the scriptures. I usually read a canon of scripture sequentially from beginning to end but I don't stop my study with just an acquaintance with the characters and plots presented. I often have questions that I will wonder about or even pose to my Heavenly Father in prayer. Frequently these questions are answered within a few days as part of my sequential reading. I consider those timely insights to be tender mercies from the Lord. They are little bits of personal revelation that comfort me, enlighten me and strengthen me. I also like to cross reference verses in the Book of Mormon to those in the Old and New Testaments, the Doctrine and Covenants, which is a collection of modern day revelations given to Joseph Smith and other latter-day prophets, and the Pearl of Great Price, which is a compilation of a history, some revelation and a translation of ancient documents. As I search a topic in each of these sets of scripture I am able to gain a clearer understanding of the doctrine of Jesus Christ. I know that the Lord speaks to me through the scriptures. I have felt the Spirit of the Holy Ghost testify of the truthfulness of these writings by a warm feeling that encompasses my heart. As I make notes in the margins of my scriptures I am able to recall bits of understanding that I received earlier. The more I read the scriptures the more firm my faith becomes.
