Hi I'm Scott

I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. I was recently called to serve in Brazil São Paulo North. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hello! My name is Scott. I'm 24. I recently graduated with my Associate in Arts and now I am preparing to serve a mission in Brazil. One of my passions is language. Learning a new language is a great source of entertainment for me and my languages include(in order of proficiency) 1. English(native language) 2. Spanish 3. Portuguese 4. German. I hope to add Italian and French to that list at some point, too. After my mission, I plan on studying either Pharmacology or Social Work. Originally I was an English major, but we all know the struggle of deciding on a major. Other than that, I love sports. I play basketball every chance that I get but I enjoy playing or watching nearly every sport.

Why I am a Mormon

I guess I already explained this a little bit in the previous section, but I have chosen to be an active member of this church simply because it brings much needed peace and joy into my life. It has given me a sense of purpose, which I didn't always have. I know that it is the true church of Christ because it was revealed to me by the power of the Holy Ghost after I had the desire to know. I know that when we are baptized, and keep our baptismal covenants, we are blessed with the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, and that is a wonderful blessing. I also love this church because it was started by a young man who had questions, and inquired of God for the answers, and I love that we are encouraged to do the same to find answers to our questions.

How I live my faith

My faith is my top priority in my life at the moment. To be honest, I struggled with it early in my life. I was born and grew up a member of this church and I had a hard time understanding many things. About a year ago, I realized that I hadn't put forth any work at all to find answers and I was just kind of sitting around, waiting. Once I started actively searching for answers by reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and all the scriptures, as well as listening and learning from the prophets, I realized just how great the gospel is and it brought me so much happiness, light, and clarity, which I had been lacking for so long. That is why I am dedicating the next two years of my life to share the gospel in Brazil. I know it works and can do the same thing for everyone! I have a couple of callings in the church. One is called "Elders' Quorum Secretary", and my job is to assist the President in his duties, occasionally teach a lesson in church, get to know and welcome the new people, keep a record of meetings, etc... I am also a home teacher. I visit members of the church in their homes and get to know them, assist them with anything they might need, and bring a spiritual message to them.

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

Scott
"The Word of Wisdom" was given to the prophet Joseph Smith from God in 1833 which stated that none of these substances should be consumed. Many people tend to agree that we should not be consuming illegal drugs, but most have a hard time understanding why we shouldn't consume coffee/tea, alcohol, or even tobacco. As someone who has lived on both sides of this issue, I know that all of these things are distractions to the spirit and mind. It is difficult to keep our focus where it needs to be, and we do not have the Holy Ghost in our lives when we have addictions of any kind in our lives. Show more Show less

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Scott
A common misconception is that Joseph Smith wrote the Book of Mormon. It was actually written by various prophets in the ancient Americas. They all testified of Jesus Christ and his role as our Savior, and that he is the Son of God. Joseph Smith found the plates on which the Book of Mormon was engraved, and he translated them to English by the power of God. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

Scott
It is another testament of Jesus Christ. It is comparable to the Bible. While the Bible was written by the ancient prophets in the Eastern hemisphere, the Book of Mormon was written by ancient prophets in the Americas. The book begins around 600 BC, when the prophet Lehi was commanded to leave Jerusalem with his family and travel toward the promised land, which we know as the Americas. Christ visited the Americas after his resurrection, and taught the people just like he did in the Bible. The Book of Mormon contains the record of that. The book ends around 400 AD.
