Hi I'm Mercedes

I grew up in Canada. I love to travel. I hate wearing shoes. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hey hey! I'm Mercedes. Whenever someone/something asks me to describe myself I always draw a blank, but I'm going to hold onto the hope that you understand that and won't judge me for the awkward introduction that you are about to read. I'm 19 years old at this moment in time, and I am preparing to serve a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I have been called to the Canada Halifax mission, which I'm super stoked for, not only because I get to serve the Lord, but also because I love Canada. Like a lot. I personally think it's the best country in the world (I may be a little biased though). With that said, it's one of my biggest dreams to travel and see all of the other amazing places out there. Top place on my bucket list is Namibia. Who wouldn't love to go on a safari?? I also love to read, go on adventures, and dance. So yeah. That's me in a nutshell!

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up a non-denominational Christian and was later baptized into a baptist church. With that said I never actually attended church for extended periods of time and by early 2015, was completely against organized religion in general. All I saw was the bad that had come from it and yes I acknowledged there was some good, but I didn't think that outweighed the awful things that had been done in the name of religion. It took my life falling apart and a conversation with a concerned friend to change that view. The day after that conversation I began reading the Book of Mormon and it's not an exaggeration when I say that that book changed my life. I immediately began to feel peace, calm, and like I was no longer lost. Slowly, but surely, I came to the knowledge of my Saviour and the restored gospel. Joining this church and getting baptized was one of the single best decisions I've ever made in my life. I've been a member for a little over a year now and trust me when I say this has been the best year of my life. I have felt happiness, love, peace and joy that I never imagined possible before. I have found purpose and looking back, I don't think my life could have led me anywhere but here. I know this church is true, that it's Christ's church restored once again to the earth. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that our loving Heavenly Father and Saviour used him to bring about that restoration. The earth once again has a living prophet and today his name is Thomas S. Monson. I know that Heavenly Father and Christ know each of us and love us more than we can ever comprehend. Because of that love, Christ performed the atonement, allowing each of us the opportunity to be supported in our trials, to be forgiven and find happiness, and to one day return home to our Father. But above all else, I know with every fibre in my being that the Book of Mormon is true and is the word of God. It contains everything you could ever need or want to know. That's why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

For me, I think the best way to live your faith is yes, following Christ, but doing it enthusiastically. Something like the church can so easily become normal, habitual, routine and I think it should be anything but that! Christ and His gospel are amazing!! Why should we treat it as any less? I live my faith by following the commandments, fulfilling my callings (such as planning activities that will bring our ward closer together and strengthening their ties to the church) and working hard to help those in need, all the while trying to remember why I joined the church in the first place so that I stay excited about it.
