Hi I'm John

I'm an avid learner, self-diagnosed goofball, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm currently living in Japan learning Japanese as I serve a mission in Kobe. One of my favorite things to do is learn, I love the feeling of mastering something new, whether it be finally understanding how to work clay spinning between my fingers, or getting a broken computer whirring back to life. I really love to learn, to work with my hands and figure out how things work. One of my favorite things to do is spend time with my family and friends. I'm the oldest of 5 siblings, it's been fun to get to experience things first out of everyone in the family. One thing that I enjoy doing is trying to make people smile, and get to talk with others. I love laughter, I love working with people, and I especially love when the two come together.

Why I am a Mormon

Like many, I was born into this church. As I grew up I remembered singing church songs, going to church every Sunday, but for a long time I wasn't really sure why. I went to church because my Mom said to, I went to youth activities because it's what I was supposed to do. Well as I grew, my life, as it does for everyone, got hard. People weren't always nice, school work was piling on, I found myself focusing on friends that didn't like me, and I ended up in constant fear of the world around me. I decided that something had to change, I needed peace. Not the kind of peace that comes from chocolate comercials, or the kind that the world says money can give. Real peace, real joy. I realized one day in church that my answer had been there for me the whole time, that the rhymes I sang as a kid were more than songs, that maybe the Book of Mormon could actually lead me down a path to a happier life rather than putting me to sleep. So that night I knelt, I bowed my head, and I opened my mouth to pray. As I sat there I felt the most amazing feeling, I felt Gods love for me, and I felt a lifetimes burden lifted off my shoulders. I'm so grateful for a Heavenly Father that loves me, that sees me and loves me despite my imperfections. I'm thankful for my Savior, and I testify that he lives today, that the tomb is empty, and that he is always waiting with open arms to help make us who he knows we can become. I'm so thankful for all the influences in my life that have helped me grow my faith, and I'm thankful that the mistakes that I've made can be washed away through Jesus Christ. This is His church, and testify that anyone who is looking for peace, like I was, can find it in Him.

How I live my faith

Right now I live in Japan, serving a full time volunteer mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I spend everyday trying to share my faith with anyone who will listen. Sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ, as well as His incomprehensible love for us, gives me so much joy. Before my mission I grew to love serving others, and that really fortified my faith. I find joy when I follow the example of my Savior, when I try to help lift others as He did. I also live my faith by following the standards that He asks us to follow. I live my faith by striving to be more like Jesus Christ.
