Hi I'm Joe Liechty

A swimmer from Pennsylvania. I love kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, sailing, hanging out with friends, and I'm a Mormon

About Me

An aspiring outdoors renaissance man and missionary to Durban, South Africa. I love the adventurous life. Hiking, backpacking, whitewater rafting and kayaking, mountain biking, off-roading, sailing, or just chilling in a hammock. Always down to hang out with friends and go to a party, play a pickup game, you pick the sport, or watch a movie (as long as it's not rated R ;P). I still need to learn how to surf...

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Mormon Church and as I grew up I saw the joy that the gospel brings to my life and to the lives of my family and friends. The gospel or 'good news' about Jesus Christ's atonement and resurrection is true and brings great peace. The gospel is something that I have never doubted. It sounds strange and there were times when I didn't follow the rules God has set in place, but I always knew, deep down, that Jesus and our Heavenly Father are real and they love and care about me. It's hard to be a Mormon sometimes but like Thomas Paine said, “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow.” The gospel gives me reason to smile in trouble and is the source of my greater strength. I know that it can bring you the same happiness it brings me.

How I live my faith

As an 11 year old Boy Scout leader, I get to help shape the future of Scouts and the future of the young men of the church. As a missionary I have the privilege of telling people about the gospel and the peace and happiness it brings. Every day I get the opportunity to live the gospel and keep the commandments God has set for us and every day I see the blessings it brings to me. It can seem restricting at times but I've experienced enough sorrow from sin to know that even if I don't know why right now, God's way really is the better way.
