Hi I'm Tekla

I am proudly a new convert as of my baptism on June 4, 2016 and receiving the Holy Spirit on June 5, 2016.

About Me

I am a single mom, aged 49, who finally answered life-long calls to investigate the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am also a cultural anthropologist and freelance writer/editor. I have three girls and I share custody with their non-Mormon father. Investigating the Mormon Church and deciding to join have been two of the best decisions I've made in my life. Becoming a member has helped me focus and come to Jesus Christ more fully and happily than ever before. I was raised Roman Catholic, but I drifted away, feeling lonely after I became divorced. The Book of Mormon enriched my faith and the Church has clearly laid out ways to follow the straight and narrow path and hold on to the iron rod. I am so grateful for the blessing I have received and the support network I have connected with wonderful, loving people.

Why I am a Mormon

I have always noticed Mormons somehow in my life. From television commercials in the 70's and 80's, I always wondered who they were. But I never really looked into that question. As I grew older, I met many Mormons and noticed a quality in them that I couldn't quite identify, but it drew me in to them as people. Still I never investigated. Two of the closest people to me in graduate school were studying Mormons as cultural anthropologists, so I learned much about the culture of Mormons—still before investigating. My life became lonely and intensely difficult after my father died and I separated from my husband in the same week. I was spiritually, emotionally, physically and eventually financially broken and lost. After years of struggle, I finally contacted the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and asked for a Book of Mormon. Two wonderful missionaries arrived one cold February night and began teaching me, and encouraging me to read the Book of Mormon. In a short time, people noticed differences in me. My children noticed I was much happier and confident. I started to take charge of finances and other temporal problems. I felt reconnected to my faith in Jesus Christ, but with an incredible support system that taught me how to live as a true Christian every day. I became a member in June 2016 and have never looked back.

How I live my faith

I work hard to read the scriptures every day. I am much better at praying - a humbling practice that was not easy for me at first. I am curious about so many things in the Church. I read as much as I can about it. I have been recently called to play the piano for the Relief Society in our Ward, and that has awakened a skill that I have neglected for a long time. So I do my best to rise to this blessing and do a good job. I struggled at first with accepting the Word of Wisdom, but now I can feel the blessings they bring me. I work hard to be a good example to my children, who are not yet members. Right now I rely heavily on the missionaries, my home teachers and my visiting sisters to help me learn as much as I an and to rebuild a life to be closer to Jesus.
