Hi I'm James

I grew up on a small island called Molokai. I have lived here most of my life because it truly is paradise to me. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am a dad and grand dad having five sons and a daughter; and sixteen grand children. I have a degree in Ornamental Horticulture and have taught college for the last 30 years. I love working with plants - flowering plants and fruit trees especially; and enjoy teaching others about my passions. I love to go camping at the beach and spending time, lots of it, with family and friends. I also enjoy riding motorcycles and hope to go on a cross country road trip, some day. I started a lawn maintenance business with my kids (to help them raise funds for athletic competition) and have maintained it even after my children have all left the "nest." I just feel a need to stay active and enjoy my life on the island of Molokai, in Hawaii.

Why I am a Mormon

My dad was a non-member and my mom was inactive, so naturally I did not attend church as a young child. I am a Mormon because (I truly believe this) a group of (church) leaders worked on a plan to activate me when I turned twelve years old, first by challenging me to attend my meetings and than to bestow the priesthood (authority to act in God's name) on me. A neighbor offered to pick me up for meetings every week - this I did until I turned fifteen and was able to get my drivers license. With the approval of my parents, I was able to drive my self to all of my meetings. I found what the church had to offer pleased me. I did not feel out of place one bit. It was like having a large extended family who helped me develop a relationship with my Savior, Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

I have been active in my community by sitting on numerous boards and advisory committees dealing with agriculture. Most of my callings in church have been administrative - as a clerk, a counselor, as activities director, as family history coordinator, and most recently as emergency preparedness coordinator. I have also had the opportunity to teach the youth of the church. I believe in living by example and have conducted my life accordingly. As a family we strive to have family scriptures and prayer each day. We have family home evening one night a week where we turn off the television and other activities for family gospel teaching and or activities. My children are my best friends and we love doing things together.
