Hi I'm Jess

I grew up in Arizona, play basketball for college, serve a mission in the Dominican Republic, i'm a Mormon

About Me

I play basketball for a local college in Arizona and have attained an Associates degree in sports medicine. I am the oldest of four children and am preparing to serve a mission in the Dominican Republic.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born and raised in this church. But when I was 16 years old, my mother died from a sudden heart attack right before Christmas. Being so close to her, I was devastated! My world had gone frombeing pretty good, to being turned upside down. I am the oldest so I had to step in and fill in for both parents while my dad grieved deeply the loss of my mom. I was very angry at that time in my life. Angry that God had taken my confidant and life long friend away from me with no warning. Angry that my dad needed help coping and was re-married to someone I hardly knew 3 months later. The only thing that I felt was good still was my athletic ability. I dove into that and slowly started to stop being full hearted in the gospel. Until I was about 19 I really didn't see what was so great about this gospel. I mean I was living a good life, doing good things, why was this gospel necessary. Then one sunday morning, I was lying on my couch waiting for my church time to roll around, I received the strongest impression. It was as if I was suddenly wrapped in the embrace of sunshine and goodness. I felt that it was time for me to learn for myself, and stop being angry with God and my dad. SO I decided to see what made people love this gospel so much that they would volunteer to live in crazy weather conditions, hundreds of miles from home, and sometimes where their native language is not spoken. Just to share what they love with others. Over the course of a couple months, I found myself truly loving this gospel. I found that I no longer was angry with God or my father, and that I could see if only just a small piece of why things happened the way they did. I love this gospel with all my heart. I know that Joseph Smith did restore the true gospel to the earth in these latter days, and that we can all return to live with our Father in Heaven again if we are willing to come unto him. I know the plan of salvation is real, and that families can be together forever!

How I live my faith

I am the co-chair in a committee that organizes weekly Monday night activities for my ward. I love being able to work to serve my fellow ward members each week and to come up with new activities for everyone. I also am the only member on my college basketball team, so I have many opportunities to stand out from the crowd on the court just by how I hold myself.
