What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Parker
The atonement is the event by which we are able to be one with God. If you look at the word atonement you can see "at one" in the word. When Jesus Christ suffered the atonement he took upon him all of our sins, doubts and weaknesses. During that time he knew what it felt to be a regular human. He was able to see each of us as we see ourselves. He has been one with all of the people who ever lived are alive today or will live in the future. The reason for this is so that he could be our advocate (or lawyer so to speak) with God. This begs the question, why did Jesus Have to die? This question is a bit complex and has several answers. But the main reason goes back to knowing what it feels like to be a normal human. While suffering for our sins in the garden of Gethsemane Jesus suffered Spiritual death.(Spiritual death is when God withdraws his presence and ceases to be with a person.) But Spiritual death is only half of what we feel as humans. To truly know what it is like to be an ordinary child of God one must experience physical and spiritual death. Show more Show less
