Hi I'm Marie Tolman Akina

I grew up in Utah but lived in Hawaii for 23 years never learning to play the ukulele. Back in Utah I taught math. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Family has always been the most important thing in my life. I'm the mother of seven plus my husband's eight. I have 24 grandchildren plus my husband's 10 and 2 great-grandchildren. I was blessed with a mother who as a widow raised 4 children in the gospel while teaching school. I grew up in the shadow of the Logan Temple surrounded by a loving extended family. I love stories of my pioneer ancestors who followed the Prophet Joseph Smith from New York to Ohio to Missouri and Nauvoo and then made the trek to Utah. I got married my senior year of college and moved to Hawaii with my husband and new born baby daughter. I loved the aloha spirit and the many cultures of Hawaii. After 23 years I became a single parent and moved home to Utah. I was blessed with a job teaching primarily remedial math at Utah State University. I taught over 20 years before retiring. During that time my children grew up. Five of them have served missions for the church. All of them have graduated from college and most have advanced degrees. They are now scattered from the East Coast to the West Coast. After 18 years I was blessed to marry Alex Akina who is my eternal companion and now my mission companion.

Why I am a Mormon

I was blessed with a believing heart from childhood but now my faith is much deeper and stronger than the faith of my childhood. Throughout my life I have been blessed and strengthened by being part of a community of faithful church members. In many little ways throughout my life I have come to recognize the blessings of the spirit in times of trial. Those small blessings prepared me to turn to the Lord during my greatest trials and feel his love and know that he was guiding and directing my path. As I strive to pray sincerely, study the scriptures, attend sacrament meeting, and serve in the temple I feel the warmth of the spirit testifying of the atonement of Jesus Christ and the truthfulness of the restored gospel.

How I live my faith

I have always been involved in church and community service. When my children were growing up I served in the PTA, Girl Scouts and in various athletic organizations for children. I love music and theater and having minimal talent I have served many years as a volunteer usher for two theaters. In the church I have served in many ways including teaching, music, scouting and leadership callings. From the callings where I felt most inadequate I have learned how the Lord blesses us and strengthens us when we turn to him. However, I feel that I best live my faith by trying to follow the Savior in how I treat others with love and respect, kindness and service. To me that is what it means to be Christian.

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Marie Tolman Akina
In my life I have been blessed in many ways by the Holy Ghost. One special way is through receiving comfort in times of trial and loss. When one of my twin sons died shortly after life I felt great comfort through the spirit and the thought I was blessed with was that he was now with my father who had died when I was only 5. Later through the Holy Ghost I felt the love of my Savior and my Father in Heaven at the darkest time in my life. Show more Show less
