Hi I'm Elizabeth (Lizanne) Polland

I am Latina and a convert to the church

About Me

I was born and raised Catholic to a South American mother and Italian American father. He met my mother on his first assignment as a foreign service officer. We moved back to the US when I was 16 years old and I settled in Washington DC for 23 years. I moved to San Jose, California to marry my husband and we have been very happy. Before moving, I completed a Master’s Degree in public health and found employment in research which is what I do today full-time.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because when my eight year old niece was visiting she saw the Lamb of God video advertised on a PBS station and asked me to order it for her. When a missionary called a month later to follow-up, I was touched and inspired by the testimony of such a young man. I wanted that faith. It took five years but I finally was baptized soon after marrying my husband - we were baptized within a week of each other. Elder Wall was instrumental in our conversion. Though other missionaries prompted us to read and pray diligently, the timing and his presence in our lives influenced me to be truly fervent and I did awaken to the knowledge that Jesus was the Christ, this was His true church and Joseph Smith was indeed a prophet of God. One of the principles I find so attractive in this church is the principle of service. Before joining the church I had a testimony of how service blesses our lives. Joining a community of brothers and sisters who felt and acted likewise made sense.

How I live my faith

I find meaning, purpose and direction from obeying God’s commandments and the teachings of his prophets and our leaders. I actively work to be more virtuous, loving, and humble each day - more today than I was yesterday, striving to serve the Lord by serving others outside the church. Recently my husband and I watched testimonies at the website DiscoveringTheWordOfWisdom.com and again learned how the church teachings reflect what we had accepted as true only a few months prior to its viewing - how we could enhance our physical and spiritual health if we heeded the counsel in the Word of Wisdom more fully.
