Hi I'm Janet Harkness

I'm a mental health professional, the mother of 6 adult children and I live in Maryland. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I've worked as a mental health counselor and I've facilitated support groups for victims of abuse and those suffering with other mental health issues. My husband and I have raised 6 wonderful children. I home schooled my four youngest children, and it was so much fun! I love amusement parks and being with friends.

Why I am a Mormon

I became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 20. I was pregnant and leaving a bad marriage. I found acceptance and support that I had never previously experienced. I read the Book of Mormon and for several months prayed about what I was reading. For almost a year I listened to missionaries, read the scriptures and prayed until finally after praying one evening, I received answers to my prayers. There is no adequate way to explain the way I felt and and the peaceful knowledge that filled my heart that night. I know that God lives. I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior and I know the Holy Ghost speaks peace and comfort to us if we but ask.

How I live my faith

I love going to church! I have had so many wonderful opportunities to grow and learn by serving in various capacities at my local church. I am currently getting ready to serve a full time mission for the church in London, England. One of my favorite callings at church is being a visiting teacher. Each member of the local congregation is assigned 1-4 people to visit in their homes. We visit each other to offer a message of hope and friendship, as well as making sure they we each have everything we need. We deeply believe that we should care for one another and that no one should go without the basic necessities of daily life.
