Hi I'm Jim

I am a Mormon. I was born into an LDS family, but wasn't converted until my late 20's. I live in Vancouver, Washington.

About Me

I was born to a less active LDS family who attended church irregularly. When I was older, I came to know that the church was the right place for me, having seen much of what the world had had to offer. I married Joan, who I met while she was working for the FBI in Washington DC. We married when I returned from Viet Nam. We had 5 beautiful daughters who have now brought us 19 grandchildren. I love hunting, fishing, camping and just about anything outdoors. I paint, shoot and reload as hobbies. I retired after 30 years at the local electrical utility, as a Communications Analyst and Fiber Optic Systems Engineer.

Why I am a Mormon

This is simple. It is true. Ever since I learned about Joseph Smith, the spiritual witness was so powerful to me that I could not deny that something important and true was here. Christ said that "by their fruits ye shall know them." The fruit that has been shed into my life by the church and the gospel, have given me courage when I needed it, faith when I needed that and an assurance that none of us are really, ever alone. I have come to appreciate the teachings and the atonement of Jesus Christ in a way that only my membership in the LDS church could make possible.

How I live my faith

I became active in the church in my mid 20's, after about 10 years of inactivity, during which I attended some college and joined the Air Force. Those 10 years left me realizing that something big was missing from my life, and that I knew where I really belonged. With that realization in mind, I started going back to church and immediately felt the Lord touch my heart and spirit powerfully. From that time on, I have not looked back. I have tried as hard as I could (but imperfectly) to live every principle of the gospel, I have served in so many callings and positions in our church, that my life has been full and rich. Joan and I have been sealed in the temple. We have watched our family grow in faith, knowledge and service over the years and the feelings of joy and satisfaction that brings cannot be adequately put into words. I love the Lord, I love His gospel, and I love this church.

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Jim
My understanding of the Atonement is a work in progress, albeit further along than it was 20 years ago. With age, experience, prayer and study, I have gradually come to understand that Jesus suffered for the worst things that this world can offer. Most people don't understand the Atonement because they don't understand the true nature of God. It has become a vast comfort to me to know that Jesus suffered and died and thus, earned His place to mediate for all of us. I can't comprehend the level of love and courage that would take. All I know is that He did and for that I love Him and I hope to be worthy of it and to one day face Him without shame. Show more Show less

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Jim
As an ex smoker and drinker, I understand the hold these things can have on a man or woman. I also understand how they cheat that man or woman out of health, wealth and happiness. I am most often drawn to the very first verses of this revelation where the Lord says that He is giving us this word of wisdom, because, in His own words....."of the evils and designs that do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto ou this word of wisdom, by revelation..........". He also reminds us that this is a principle with a promise. In my life, I have been able to compare obedience to this law, with disobedience to it, and I know, first hand, that living it has been one of the greatest blessings in my life......ever. The promises connected to it have been given to me in abundance! Show more Show less
