Hi I'm Ellen

I'm a mom and grandma. I love my family more than anything. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up gardening, reading, cooking, and sewing next to my parents. These continue to be some of my favorite things to do, especially now with my children and grandchildren. Actually pretty much doing anything with my family is my favorite thing to do. Our family has been able to travel and visit all 50 states in the United States, plus a lot of Canada and Europe. We love discovering new places. Our home has also been a home to a few additional young people during their high school years. We were a small family of 4 - mom (me), dad, brother, and sister - but we have also had a young man whose parents move live his senior year with us, a young girl who needed a place of refuge, a foreign exchange student from Italy, and a newly baptized teenage all share our home with us over the years. I have been grateful to have opened my heart to these "extra" sons and daughters. My husband has encouraged and challenged me to do hard things; one of which was hike the Grand Canyon. Together we have studied and earned our TESOL certificate - Teaching English to Secondary Language Learners - I love to teach. Our most recent adventure is preparing to serve a mission for our church in Italy over the next 18 months. Learning the Italian language is just about the most challenging thing I have ever done but I will probably discover being away from my family in a foreign country will be the hardest thing I have ever done. But our family motto is "we do hard things."

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have prayed to my Heavenly Father and felt His witness through the Holy Ghost that this church and this gospel is the best way for me to learn best to follow His Son, Jesus Christ. I firmly believe in eternal families and know through special times in the temple, the House of God, that my family has been united - sealed - together beyond this earth life. I want that more than anything. I have felt answer to so many prayers and guidance throughout my life because I know my Heavenly Father loves me. I am a Mormon because this gospel brings me joy.

How I live my faith

I love to teach, especially teaching about my Savior, Jesus Christ. Over the years I have taught youth the scriptures stories about Jesus Christ from The Old and New Testament, The Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenant. I have taught ages 14 to 18 in a before school program called seminary, where we met each morning for 50 minutes to study and learn these stories and how to apply them to make our lives better. One of the hardest things I ever did in following Christ's example was bringing my mom into my home for the last 9 months of her life. My mom was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2012 and this disease would eventually take her life. I cared for her by driving her to her chemotherapy appointments and doctor appointments, bathing her, providing for her basic needs, and also having fun with her. My mom loved to garden and I improvised a small garden for her in my yard that she could grow a few flowers. With my husband's help we went on mini day vacations to gardens, lighthouses, and the beach so she could continue to live her life as full as possible. Her last week was a special time of me holding her and cuddling with her as she was soon to return home to our Heavenly Father and be reunited with my dad. On the day of her passing I visited the temple and felt that my parents were reunited and received great peace with this feeling.
