Hi I'm Malah

Missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Portugal, Lisbon Mission from June 2016.

About Me

I am a 19-year-old Politics student at university, with an opinion on just about everything! I’ve been a Latter-day Saint all my life, and am preparing to serve a mission for the Church in Portugal! I’ll begin serving in June, and cannot wait to meet and teach and learn from the people of Portugal. With five siblings, my home life is pretty exciting, and my family love to go on adventure holidays and explore new countries together. As well as being a full-time student, I teach piano and play the flute, and often my sisters and I will sing and play piano together, which we love - until we fall out! (But we always fall back in again...). I’ve memorised the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film by heart and adore all things Jane Austen. Shopping, Pinterest, writing and talking (a lot!) are what occupy my leisure hours.

Why I am a Mormon

I suppose I’m a Mormon first and foremost because my parents are, but that reason only works til a certain age. I have always been encouraged to pray about what I learn about the Church, and to find out for myself whether or not I believe it, and whether or not I want to be a Mormon. Over the last several years, I’ve learned and prayed and felt that this is right. I’ve seen the outcomes of living this faith – both in myself and in others – and I firmly believe that all good things come from Heavenly Father. This gospel makes logical sense to me, and it speaks to my heart. I love the promised blessings that are available if we live it – eternal families, happiness, strength, peace and love – and I am so grateful to have seen these in my life. I’m a Mormon because I believe that Heavenly Father still loves us all and wants to speak to us, because joy is available to all of us, and because life goes on beyond this one. I’m a Mormon because I know there is more scripture than the Bible, and because Heavenly Father has a plan for us. I know this, and I know it because I’m a Mormon.

How I live my faith

At the moment, I’m serving as a Primary Teacher in my ward (for the 4-7-year-olds), which is really exciting. My students are so clever, and we get to colour in (which is a bit of a novelty for a uni student!). I’m also involved in the Institute programme in my stake (a weekday class for 18-30-year-olds run by the Church), where I love to ask difficult questions and explore new parts of my faith. My next step is serving a mission, and so I've been preparing for this by reading my scriptures every day and sharing the gospel with my friends (I politely force them to be guinea pigs for my lessons). In our church, women are split into pairs and given a few women to visit each month. My mum and I are a partnership, and we share a short spiritual thought with our Sisters and then ask if we can help them in any way. Living my faith is pretty easy because I've grown up with it, so it's just like living my life normally, and always trying to be better. At home we have a weekly Family Home Evening, where all the family get together to share a lesson, is really some songs, and - of course - treats! And I have some wonderful friends whose examples help me to better live my faith.
