Hi I'm Ben Lems

I was born in Rotterdam and immigrated with my parents to America as a young boy. We joined the LDS (Mormon) faith when I was 12.

About Me

I am a retired educator. I retired after 42 years of service in the public school system as a teacher, school counselor, and school and district administrator. My wife and I have 9 children and 22 grandchildren with more expected. That keeps us very busy. We love being with our family. Besides family, I love camping, hiking and fishing. I enjoy playing the piano and spending quiet time reading a book. I have a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and love to serve my family, friends and neighbors.

Why I am a Mormon

I was baptized along with my parents and sister when I was 12 years old. I had my first experience with the church and the gospel of Jesus Christ when I went to primary with one of my neighborhood friends. I remember feeling good every time I went. Even as a young man I knew there was something special there. Later, as my family was taught the gospel by the missionaries, I had similar experiences and feelings. Following my baptism, I remember feeling like I was floating on air. I asked my grandfather, who was already a member of the church, what that feeling was and he explained to me that it was the spirit of our Heavenly Father confirming that what I had done was good and right. I have felt that same confirming spirit many times throughout my life. When I was in high school I enrolled in a seminary class. The teacher challenged us to read the Book of Mormon. I decided to take the challenge and as I read, I had the same spiritual experience I had when I was baptized and I knew without a doubt that what I was reading really happened and that it was the word of God. These and many similar experiences since have been a testimony to me that our Father in Heaven is real. That he knows us individually and loves us. That he answers our prayers. Through study and prayer, I have gained a testimony that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and that through him the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. The restored gospel has brought meaning and joy to my life in a way that could not have come any other way. I am grateful for a loving savior and His atoning sacrifice for me that opened the door for me and my family to return to my Heavenly Father and live together in His presence for all eternity.

How I live my faith

I have served in many capacities in my church. Much of my time has been spent working with the youth in our youth organizations and as a Bishop. I have also had the opportunity to serve in many other leadership positions in the priesthood. I have played the organ for our church meetings and accompany many individuals and groups on the piano. I currently lead our church choir. I enjoy my current assignment to visit a few of our church members each month to check on their welfare and give whatever assistance is needed.
