Hi I'm Brooke

18, Student at BYU-Idaho, Daughter, Sister, I'm a Mormon

About Me

I'm 18 years old and currently a freshman at BYU-Idaho. I spent the majority of my life in Houston, Texas, but have also lived in Canada, Minnesota, and Chile. My current major is Psychology and I hope to one day be able to use that to help and counsel people with mental disabilities. I love to laugh, watch movies, sing, listen to music, ski,be with my family, and I just love to be with people in general. I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints my whole life, and am preparing to serve the Lord of 18 months.

Why I am a Mormon

One of my favorite stories in the New Testament is the story of Peter walking on water. In this story, Peter sees Christ walking across the ocean to their fishing boat and has the faith to leave the boat and join Him. As he walks, he becomes aware of the ocean and the wind around him, and his faith falters. He falls into the water and cries out for Jesus, who immediately reaches for him. How often in our life do we feel that we are falling short, and that our faith is faltering? I have had my fair share of struggles in this world, and I can say that I fall short every day. However, through these short-comings I have learned the importance of reaching out Christ, who stands with his hands ALWAYS outstretched to catch us when we are sinking. I recently read a book called "The Continuous Atonement" by Brad Wilcox who says of this story: "In such low moments, we surprise ourselves by how quickly we can slip backward even when we have sworn before God, angels, and witnesses that we wouldn't. We shouldn't be surprised, however, at how quickly Christ comes to our aid if we seek Him." This is why I am a Mormon. I am a Mormon because I know that through the grace of God, I can be pulled out of the swirling waters that make up mortality. I have felt myself drowning in life, and my faith has faltered, but Christ is always there when I reach for Him. This is not just the case for me, but for ever other person who has been and ever will be. He knows what you have been through, He knows every heartache and disappointment that you will ever face. He is standing there, you just need the courage to get out of the boat and walk to Him.

How I live my faith

Because I was born and raised a Mormon, I have been taught since I was little the teachings of Jesus Christ through both the Book of Mormon and the Bible. The most prominent way I live these teachings is by trying to be as Christ like as possible. Jesus Christ is the center of our religion, and the center of my life. How do I try to be like Him? By loving others the way He would. The first thing that I do when I meet someone is remember that they are a child of God, and He loves them so much. Also, I try to be as kind as possible, slow to anger, and quick to forgive, because you never know what another person could be feeling or what they could be going through. This helps me to be a more positive person, making it easier you be happy and feel the spirit no matter what the current circumstances are.
