Hi I'm Martin

I'm grandpa, father, backpacker, and I love the outdoors, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the oldest of four children and grew up(?) as a “Military Brat”, When asked where I am from, I can only answer “all over the place”. We were raised with a love the outdoors and the wonders of nature. I went to BYU, Provo, majoring in Agronomy and Range Management, putting myself through collage and a mission as a Wildland Firefighter. After serving on a mission to Japan, getting married, and starting a family, I joined the Nevada Highway Patrol, retiring after 31 years to go to work for Homeland Security for four years. Since my retirement, my wife and I have been heavily involved with the LDS Church’s Addiction Recovery Program as group missionaries, and as Temple Workers, and absolutely loving both callings.

Why I am a Mormon

There is nothing that brings greater comfort, stability and happiness in my life than my membership in the church. It has brought me the comfort and stability I have seen lacking for so many. I have found that abiding by the Lords commandments and teachings makes me a much better person and brings me peace of mind and of spirit. I have seen the teachings of Jesus Christ in action while working with the Addiction Recovery Program, and the changes in so many lives of the participants and the as well as the blessings brought to their families. I know or Father in Heaven is the same as in olden times and continues to speak through a living prophet today. Jesus Christ truly is the same “yesterday and today”. He is constant, a guide, my savior and redeemer, as he is yours, and I see the hand of God in my life on a daily basis. I have seen His creations as I hiked along mountain trails, or gazed up at the heavens at night. I have witnessed the miracle of the births of my children, and felt the closeness of His comforting spirit in the passing of loved ones. This is the true church of Jesus Christ with the fullness of his teachings and His authority on the Earth. I know of myself through studying, pondering and praying as I have studied the Bible and the Book of Mormon, and, applied the principles and teachings of Jesus Christ in my life.

How I live my faith

It was not easy to always follow the principles of the Savior in my chosen profession. I found by giving service to others, by respecting individuals no matter how debased they were, by trying to uplift others, and to truly be concerned for other’s welfare, brought me peace, even with and in the most trying of times. Truly, my greatest joy [next to that of being with my family], is by serving others, in many capacities. As was stated by a prophet of old, “When ye are in the service of your fellow man, ye are only in the service of your God”.
