Hi I'm Porter Thorkelson

I'm a cancer survivor, amputee, missionary. And I'm a Mormon!

About Me

I grew up in San Diego and then moved to Draper, Utah. After the move I picked up on a game that wasn't really played in southern California but played a lot in Utah: rugby. After a couple years in Utah I was diagnosed with bone cancer in my right leg. I did about a year of chemo, fought and won. The only things the cancer won from me was my right leg and much of my hair haha. I can still move normally and do just about anything. And my hair doesn't look that bad I don't think :) ... And now I am currently serving a mission in San Jose, California.

Why I am a Mormon

Though my parents raised me in this church, I found for myself that this isn't just some man made organization, but the same church that Christ himself established 2000 years ago. That this is the only church on the earth that has the same authority, structure, ordinances, and fruits as the church we read of in the New and Old Testament. The way I came by this knowledge is through the Book of Mormon. God never stopped speaking to his children, and he spoke to many nations to prove that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever. And he will never cease speaking to his children until his work is finished. The Book of Mormon, simply, is just one additional proof of that. And through this book and living Prophets today, much truth has been restored. Truth that Christ taught and Prophets of old knew, but were lost over time during the Apostasy. Truths like the actual nature of God and His Son Jesus Christ, the Plan of Salvation, a preexistence, the state of our souls after death and before the Resurrection, the multiple degrees of Glory that we will inherit after the Resurrection, temple ordinances, family sealing, and many more. And by the power of the Holy Ghost I know these things are true.

How I live my faith

For two years (May 2015 - May 2017) I will serve as a missionary in San Jose, California teaching people about the restored gospel.
