Hi I'm J. Richard Overduyn

Finance & operations management is my background, presently retired, super busy, enjoying it, and . . . . . . I am a Mormon!

About Me

I am a "young" man, age 71, that enjoys life to the fullest. I am married to a beautiful wife and together we have been blessed with 6 amazing children, 3 sons and 3 daughters. Added to that are currently 16 wonderful and talented grandchildren. I'm a business and financial operations manager, love teaching, woodworking, playing golf, attending the temple, and just being outdoors, and now my new adventure, retirement. I am deeply humbled, totally aware of, and very thankful for the many blessings our Heavenly Father has so willingly given us.

Why I am a Mormon

I was baptized at the age of 8 and grew up in the church because of my wonderful parents. However, when I became a teenager I began questioning them, as well as everyone else around me, as to their faith and beliefs. It didn't seen that important to me anymore and I began questioning everything and yes, at times, ridiculing too. It finally got to the point that I needed to really know "why" for myself and not just because they said so. It was then that I became an investigator, and began following the steps that every investigator has to follow to know for themselves, namely 1) have a desire, 2) study the scriptures, 3) repent of my sins, 4) live the teachings and commandments, and 5) pray fervently and often for answers. It took a while, but I can still remember the day when I received my answer from the Lord. It wasn't a loud voice, it wasn't a slap to the side of my head, and it wasn't a prophetic vision. It was a feeling! A deep, comforting, spiritual feeling! It was a spiritual confirmation in my heart and throughout my soul that what I was taught, what I was studying, and what I was praying for was true! It all fit together and was true! I literally cried for days, because I was so happy and full of joy and from that time to this day, by staying close to Him in prayer, keeping His commandments, and repenting continually, my testimony continues to grow! He in turn has been with me through good times, tough times, setbacks and hardships. As long as I keep my end of the bargain, I continue to feel His guidance, direction, answers to my prayers, and His comfort, peace, and unconditional love. Now that I have this wonderful blessing, I want others to have this experience too. That's why I'm sharing this gospel message to all who are seeking for comfort, peace and answers to life's questions!

How I live my faith

My faith and my religion are my way of life. Since my "conversion" when decisions need to be made, I strive to live by the words, "What would Jesus do?" I am not perfect, but I try to follow the example set by Jesus Christ. I have learned that serving others brings true happiness, and since I love being happy, I strive to serve! I have had many callings throughout my life in the church, in executive leadership roles, as a full-time missionary in the Netherlands, working as a leader with the young men and teaching in the various auxiliaries in the church. I am currently a counselor to the "experienced" (older) male members, and will be serving another full-time mission with my eternal companion as a Senior Couple in the Hawaii Honolulu Mission. I love to teach the gospel, helping and watching young people change their lives by discovering truths, gaining testimonies, following Christ and keeping His commandments. It's amazing to watch them grow physically and spiritually as they change for the better, becoming happier, healthier, and having a greater love for life. This is true for us "experienced" folks too.

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

J. Richard Overduyn
Missionaries will share a message about Jesus Christ, His Atonement for all people, and His love for you! They will teach you about principles of happiness that, when followed, will enrich your life on earth beyond your wildest expectations. This is called the great plan of happiness and salvation, which allows all people the opportunity to "come unto Christ" to live with Him again. Christ lives today, He is our Savior. He knows you by name, loves you, and wants you and your family to be happy! Then when that time comes, He wants you and your family to return to Him to be happy for eternity! This is their message. This is what they will talk about when they visit your home. Show more Show less
