Hi I'm Derek Baker

I'm a missionary in Edmonton, Canada. I grew up in Houston, Texas. I play ultimate frisbee. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am serving a full-time mission in Edmonton, Canada for two years. After my mission I plan to study General Finance at BYU Provo and then attend a law school and obtain my law degree to become a corporate lawyer. I love all sports, and I play ultimate frisbee competitively. I play the piano and organ, and I occasionally accompany my church congregation when we sing hymns. I love the outdoors and being in nature, especially near any body of water. I grew up going to beaches and lakes, and I love all water sports.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into this church, but I was never forced to attend church meetings by my parents. I continue to choose going to church because I love this church and I know that this church was restored by Joseph Smith. I know that through this church that everyone can return to live with our Heavenly Father as long as we live righteously. I have read the Book of Mormon and I know that to be true, and it constantly influences my life and gives me the guidance to make it through my day. I live by the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, because it continually brings me happiness, and I know that through Christ's teachings that we can receive eternal happiness.

How I live my faith

The most important aspect to living my faith is constantly moving forward. I've come to learn that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not one of perfection, but of progression. Of course, we all have our bad days where we feel as if we're moving backwards, but I'm so grateful to our Savior for performing the Atonement so we can repent and change for the better. I look for ways to improve myself which often means I need to look outward. I've learned that when I am serving my neighbors, I have become a better version of myself through charity, the pure love of Christ. I live my faith each and every day by looking for opportunities to share the restored Gospel that has brought me so much happiness. I strive to be obedient to the Commandments of the Lord, but when I make a mistake, I quickly repent and change.

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

Derek Baker
Young men in the church are strongly encouraged to serve a mission, however it is not required. Young men are able to serve a mission starting at 18 years old, and women at 19. Many people feel grateful for the opportunity to serve not only the church, but their Heavenly Father. I am serving a mission in Edmonton, Canada, and I love the ability to serve the Lord every day by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone I meet. Nothing brings me greater joy than by bringing everlasting happiness to those I teach. Show more Show less
