Hi I'm Dacia

I'm a deaf mother of three children. I have cochlear implants in both ears, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a deaf mother of three teen-aged hearing children, and they are a big part of the reason I chose to undergo surgeries for cochlear implantation. Cochlear implants are tiny electrical devices that are surgically inserted in the cochlea, which is the snail-like part of the ear, and then upon sound, they pulse the cochlea, triggering the brain to recognize the sounds around me. There is a lot of cool technology involved, so trust me when I say cochlea implants are a miracle from God. I also joke I have bionic ears. My family enjoys a great sense of humor, with my husband at the top of making our corny jokes roll along. I love to write Christian fiction, read, and to create greeting cards using artistic rubber stamps. Occasionally I pull out the sewing machine to make clothes and homey accents for our home. Before my hearing worsened enough to warrant the implants, I sang in choirs and enjoyed playing piano. I am so blessed that there is the miracle of technology of helping people hear and enjoy daily life.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the church in 1996 because while I was learning about the church, I felt a very warm, soft and glowing sensation that this is the right church for my future family. My husband and I were experiencing challenges at the time, and it was clear we needed the foundation of Christ to base our future family on. We also received a dramatic testimony of the importance of tithing when we did it for the first time. within weeks, we were blessed with a new job for my husband and desperately needed food. I am so grateful for the friend who recognized our need for Christ in our lives. And I thoroughly enjoy the relationship I have with Him. I feel his love for me every day, and my earnest wish is for others to feel the same happiness I have of knowing they are loved too.

How I live my faith

At church, I lead the music in the women's group. I also send greeting cards to church members to encourage them in their own daily lives. I love to create individualized cards for this very purpose. I also strive to read my scriptures and pray daily, as this helps me stay focused on Christ. I use an e-reader to read the scriptures, which helps when I'm on the go with my children. As I write fiction, I try to incorporate Christian values with a touch of the humor I love to live with daily. After all, following Christ doesn't mean I can't laugh or smile.

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

We believe in the Holy Bible because Joseph Smith appealed to it to answer his question about which church to join in his community. When he prayed for wisdom, that is when he received the revelation that he shouldn't join any of them. I believe in the Bible for a similar reason. It holds answers to many questions about faith in Christ, and how to follow Him through our daily lives. The Book of Mormon is a companion to the Bible that I value very much. Show more Show less

What is the Relief Society?

This is the group in which I lead music for my ward. I plan the hymns we will sing based on the day's topic, and conduct the music with the pianist accompaniment. It's a lot of fun, and helps me keep my joy in music satisfied. Show more Show less
