Hi I'm Irving Garibaldi

I grew up in Arizona. I started running in High School and now I coach cross country and track. I love languages and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I ran cross country and track in high school and ran in college as well. My teammates and I grew close, and I got to know people from different high schools and backgrounds and really got connected to the sport. I started as a Secondary Education-English major, but left to pursue English and prepare for graduate school in journalism. I also coach at my high school and I love being able to share experiences in the sport, talking to teenagers and also getting to know other kids and how they approach the sport. I am also passionate about languages and as I began to dig deeper into the German language, I developed an appreciation for my own Latino heritage. As a journalist I want to meet people for the stories they have, and to respectfully and accurately share those with others.

Why I am a Mormon

In college I enrolled in a class last minute, which turned out to be a complete waste of time, except for the friendship I made with a lovely young freshman who was LDS. I told her I liked to read scripture and that I also knew many kind Mormons from my cross country team. The next week, she returned with a copy of the Book of Mormon and gave me a tour of the Institute of Religion. We spent a lot of time together prior to her leaving for her mission to Spain. I've met many members who have blessed my life with personal testimonies and encouragement and I strive to do the same for other recent converts. There are several reasons I believe in the uplifting power of the gospel but I love that I can figure out who I am meant to be and how I can be happy through living the gospel.

How I live my faith

My calling in the church is Elder's Quorum Secretary meaning I keep track of attendance and help the Elder's Quorum President (Leader of the Ward's Elders) in any way I can. We meet as much as possible to think of ideas to help the ward with Home Teaching (where we visit the houses of other Ward members and grow closer as friends), and I also help organize the Home Teaching list for the Elders. I also like to go on visits with the Missionaries. I like sharing experiences with them and love to be proactive even though it's very difficult for me to share the gospel with people I know outside of the Church. When my family asks questions I answer but I don't like to be pushy. I am currently filling paperwork to serve a full-time mission because I believe that all I've ever wanted to do was get to know people for who they are and to uplift them through the love that has helped me overcome my struggles.

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

Irving Garibaldi
When I felt the prompting to serve a mission, I was pulled by gravity to change my life and invest in myself believing that I could do what the Lord asked. I am terrified. I don't want to leave the life I am creating but I can always return and through faith and hard work I will make something of myself. Show more Show less
