Hi I'm Janice Lawes

I'm a recently retired grandma who loves to sew, read and help out in my community. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I recently retired after working in county government for 34 years. I love having more time to spend with my family, especially the grandchildren. Sewing , especially making things (quilts, bags, toys) out of odd & ends of fabric is my favorite hobby . I also enjoy reading and helping out in my community, such as with our Community Dinner Table and Community Pantry. My husband and I like to play Scrabble; we often have a game set up to play while we share a meal. It helps keep our minds sharp and it's fun. We also like to work in our yard; it is quite small, but we grow a little raised bed vegetable garden and have flower borders. It is satisfying to keep it looking nice.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the Protestant faith and always went to Sunday School and youth choir and, when I was a teenager, to the youth fellowship. I always believed in God and Jesus Christ and am grateful for the foundation my parents gave me by taking me to church. When I was 15 years old the missionaries contacted my mom and she invited them to our home and we had the missionary discussions. I can't say that I was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at that time, although my mom, my siblings and I were baptized. However, as I continued to attend my new church and felt welcome and wanted, I began to receive a testimony that this really was the true church; the restoration of the church the Savior established when He was on the earth. In the 50 years since I was baptized I have continued to be active in the Church and have received many blessings. I know it is true. I know we have a Father in Heaven who loves us and cares for each of us. I know that Jesus Christ is our Redeemer and that His atonement provides us with the way back to our heavenly home. I know that Joseph Smith was the first prophet of this dispensation and that he translated the Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ, by revelation from God and that is a true witness of the truths taught in the Holy Bible. I also know that the Church has been led by prophets, called of God, since the time of the restoration and that Thomas S. Monson is truly God's prophet on the earth today. I am so thankful to be a "Mormon"! I am thankful to know that I can, if I am faithful, live again with my family and with my Father in Heaven. I am thankful to know that our little son, who died at the age of 2, will be with us again. I am thankful that the trials and challenges of this life have a purpose and that God loved us enough to give us this earthly experience to prepare us to have Eternal Life through obedience to His laws and ordinances. The Church is true!

How I live my faith

Church is a big part of my life. I teach the 15 year-old class in Sunday School; they are such good kids and I enjoy learning with them. I am also a ward missionary. That means I sometimes go out with the full-time missionaries when they have appointments and I help fellowship and teach new members of the church. Actually, all of the members of the church are involved in fellow-shipping--everyone needs to have support and friendship. I try to be sure to notice when there is someone new and make them feel welcome; if someone is sitting alone, I sit with them and try to make a new friend. In our community I have been involved with "Stone Soup" for several years. This is a fund -raiser to support our local community action agency. We have 10-12 soup vendors (from local restaurants and organizations) who prepare and serve small cups of their best soup. People in the community pay a small admission fee which allows them to sample all the soups (plus rolls and dessert) and vote for their favorite soup. There is also entertainment, a raffle, silent auction and kids' games going on, so there is something for everyone. This past year we added celebrity judges to the event, and that was really fun. This event is the biggest fund-raiser for the organization, and I am glad to be part of it.
