Hi I'm Garry

I live in Eastern Oregon. I am married and we have 5 children and 27 grandchildren. I'm retired and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I graduated from law school 40 years ago. I have practiced law and have served as a state trial court judge for 19 years before I retired. I love to garden, read, play golf and woodwork. But most of all I love spending time with my family. I have been an avid runner for many years. I ran a marathon with my daughter when I was sixty-two. For years I ran with our standard poodles as my running companions. Recently I had a bad crash and my family convinced me that it was time for me to learn how to walk. Now 6 days a week I take a long walk with one of our dogs.

Why I am a Mormon

I was baptized a member of the church when I was 12 but I wasn't actively involved in the church until I graduated from high school and began attending college. Shortly after becoming active in the church I served a mission for the church in Australia. That experience was life changing to me. I realized that the church was an essential part of my life. Since that time I have always been very involved with my religion. A scripture from the Book of Mormon states, "We preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins” (2 Nephi 25:26). In just a few words, that sums up how my wife and I have tried to raise our family. What a joy it has been for me to see each of our children doing the same with our grandchildren. I know that we are all God's children and are here to learn of him and to learn how to make the choices necessary to be like him and his son. I have a testimony of the love God and Christ have for all of their children. I love the scriptures, including the Book of Morman and the testimonies they contain of Christ. I know that he is my savior and redeemer. I know that God has restored his priesthood to the earth and has given us prophets in our day so that we can continue to know his will for us. How blessed my life has been because of this knowledge.

How I live my faith

I have recently been released from serving as Bishop of our local congregation. I now teach the 12 and 13 year olds in Sunday School. I love teaching the youth. They are filled with energy and curiosity and at the end of every class I find that my time with them has been the highlight of my Sunday. My wife and I are very involved in family history. We have recently been called to serve as missionaries for 18 months in the Australia Melbourne Mission. We will be involved with digitally preserving historical records in courthouses, government buildings and churches. We are so excited to be able to serve in this way.
