Hi I'm John M. Chan 陳家驹

I was born in China. When I was 10 years old, I immigrated to Canada by myself. In 2 Nephi 1:5-6, that was Lord's promise to me!

About Me

My name is John or Chinese name, Gar Goey 陳家駒. I was born in China and immigrated to Canada by myself as a 10 year old. I arrived in Canada in May 1959 and resided with my paternal grandfather, who was a retired vegetable farmer in Medicine Hat, Alberta. I started my elementary education learning basic English. The gospel of Jesus Christ was introduced to me by two Elder missionaries, Elder Lewis and Elder Hart. I was baptized shortly. In 1963, my grandfather suffered a stroke and pass away. I was alone and on my own. After completing grade 10, I was able to immigrate to The Dalles, Oregon to live with my uncle, Albert who with his restaurant partner, Tommy G, operated a Chinese restaurant. I continued my high school education attending The Dalles High School and also worked at the Shamrock, my uncle's restaurant learning how to cook Chinese food. I graduated in the top 10% of my class. I came back to Canada in 1969 and attended U of L majoring in Sciences. I graduated in 1972. I was happily married to a beautiful Canadian born girl in 1972. We have three grown children and 12 wonderful grandchildren and expecting a new little spirit to join our family in June. I am an entrepreneur at heart, not afraid to start new business ventures which some are very successful and some are not.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I am a fortunate member of His true church, the church that bears His name, The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints. I was led out of Communist China in 1958 as a youngman of 9 years old, leaving my family behind. This was prophesied in the Book of Mormon in 2 Nephi 1:5-6. I was to immigrate to Canada to live my paternal grandfather whom I never met before. My mother convinced me that it was necessary because I would be the family's life line when that opportunity came to sponsor them to Canada. During my early years in Medicine Hat, Alberta, I was approached by two missionary Elders who taught me the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His plan of eternal happiness. I was baptized along with two other friends in 1963. This is the Saviour's church that was restored through the prophet Joseph Smith. We now have the fulness of the Gospel to guide and direct us. We also have been blessed with a living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, as the Lord's mouthpiece on Earth today. We also have living apostles to direct the affairs of His church today. I know this is true. I leave my personal testimony to anyone who reads this. In the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, Amen.

How I live my faith

I am very privileged and a honor to serve in various callings in the Church. I have served the following church positions: Bishop, Bishop counselor, High councilor, Membership clerk, Young Men presidency counselor, Home teacher. I also participated in my community by doing service work in spreading wood chips in city parks. I also participated in hunger drive by donating and collecting food for the city's food banks. I have organized our church wards open house to the community.

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

John M. Chan 陳家驹
Yes...husband and wife can be together eternally only if they are sealed together in God's Holy Temple. Sealing ordinances are utmost important in order for families to be eternal and performed by a priesthood holder who has the authority to seal families. Show more Show less
