Hi I'm Gary Grover

I am a 75 year old husband, father, grandfather and I am a Mormon. I am a veteran, a retired educator and live in Provo, Utah.

About Me

I was born in Southeastern Idaho and raised in a small farming community. I am descended from early converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, many who came from Europe and pulled handcarts to the Salt Lake Valley. Two of my female ancestors were part of the ill-fated Martin handcart company. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in history. My time at the university was broken up by a two-and-one-half year mission to Norway and three years in the US Army, where I served as a Counter Intelligence Special Agent, most of the time in Germany. I also served a few years in a National Guard linguistic unit. After graduating from BYU I worked for a few years in retail store management but found that it was not very fulfilling. I returned to school and earned a teaching certificate and then completed a career in public education. I love to read, listen to classical music and spend time with family. About seven years ago I took up bicycling for exercise and most days take a 30 mile round ride up Provo Canyon and back home.

Why I am a Mormon

Even though I grew up as a member of the church and had a testimony, I went through a difficult time as a missionary in Norway when I felt the need to gain a more sure witness. I studied the Book of Mormon more earnestly, prayed more fervently and did receive a firm witness from the the Holy Ghost. That witness has sustained me and helped me get through difficult times and receive additional witnesses over the years. One example was standing before Frans Schwartz’s painting of The Agony in the Garden and being overwhelmed with a witness of Christ divinity and Atoning sacrifice, and the love of God and Jesus Christ for us. I stand firm as a witness of God and Christ’s love for His children.

How I live my faith

I do my best to serve and help others. I study the scriptures and pray. I attend my church meetings and do my best to keep the Sabbath day holy. I accept church callings and serve to the best of my ability. My wife Barbara and I have recently been called to serve for 18 months in the Virginia Richmond Mission. We will be at the Quantico Marine Base.
