Hi I'm Elder Swatling

I love serving. I'm a Mormon

About Me

My family lives in Georgia, but I am currently serving a full-time mission in California. Growing up, my parents taught me the values of education and work. But what I had to find for myself was Christ, and I know that I have truly found His true gospel on the earth today.

Why I am a Mormon

For me, I sort of wanted to know for myself if this "Mormon" church is true. I didn't want to live these "commandments" my whole life, only to be proven wrong later. So finding the truth wasn't too important for me in my early teenage years - I just wanted friends. Some "seeds," or beginnings of truth, were planted in my youth, even though I didn't recognize them at the time. I was beginning to feel God's presence in my life, but I didn't act on anything. I just wanted to live my life the way I had always lived it. It wasn't until my last semester of high school that I decided to "act" on those seeds. I attended a class to prepare to serve a mission for this church. I know the principles, but I didn't fully believe them. I didn't want to serve a mission. Soon after beginning to attend, that class was the highlight of my week. It was a sacrifice - 30 minutes away in driving, and it cut into school work, but I felt like it was worth it. I saw the examples of other young adults preparing to serve there. I saw the light in them, and I wanted to feel that way all the time. I decided to read the Book of Mormon. I knew I needed to be forgiven, and I knew that I could be redeemed if I relied on Christ. The Atonement, the redeeming power of Christ, is why I'm a Mormon. I have felt peace and joy in my life because of it. The Book of Mormon testifies of that Joy, which comes because of Christ. The Book of Mormon helps us understand that He loves all of His children. Because of that, I know that He loves me, just as much as He loves you. No matter where we come from in life, no matter your mistakes - He will always love you

How I live my faith

I live my faith by doing all that I can to be like Christ, by living His teachings. As a missionary, I want to help others live a good life, find joy in their families, and become like Jesus Christ

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Elder Swatling
This is a deep question, and it involves a lot of studying and pondering to truly know what the Atonement is and what it does for us. The analogy that I found useful to compare to is Newton's 3rd law - simply stated, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. When we sin, or make choices contrary to God's commandments, there must be a negative consequence. This is "The Law of Justice," which, if you've heard of the book/show/movie "Les Miserables," is portrayed by Javert. He wants everyone to pay when they break the law, even if it stealing bread when you are starving. Justice must be done. But there is another law, "The Law of Mercy" which begs for forgiveness when something wrong is done. Christ fulfilled the "reaction" of sin, by taking upon the sins of the world - through immense suffering on the cross and at Gethsemane - so that we did not have to feel the sting of sin. The law of Justice is fulfilled, because someone payed for the sin. The law of Mercy is fulfilled as well, because we - the whole human race - do not feel the horrifying effects of the sins we commit. He sacrificed his life for us, so that we did not have to feel that pain. He sacrificed so that we could become clean, and have the great opportunity to live with him again. He loves us so much.
