Hi I'm Barry Baker

I grew up in California. I've lived in England, jumped out of airplanes, climbed glaciated peaks and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was the only boy in my family with 6 sisters. My father was a dynamic civic leader and my mother was & is, a musical wonder. At 95, she still plays and teaches the piano. I swam the butterfly in high school. I grew up near the ocean and have enjoyed surfing and body surfing. In my 40's, I ran two marathons. I have summitted Mt. Rainier, Mt Hood, Mt Whitney, Humphrey's Peak, Delano Mt, and others. I served in the North British Mission in the 60's. It was cold, but I grew past the weather and fell in love with the English people and country. I have visited England trice since my mission and renew those feelings. I'm a husband and father of 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls. I have been active in my community (school board, city commissions, Board of Realtors, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts & LDS church). Since the early 2000's my wife and I (and sometimes family) have traveled internationally. We are thrilled to meet people of so many different cultures. When we travel, one of our favorite activities is to attend church & feel the same wonderful spirit in the church meetings whether we understand the language or not.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born a member of the Mormon church, but as a teenager I decided to read the Bible & Book of Mormon and ask God directly if the Book of Mormon was true. The summer I was 17, I mentally worked very hard to only think good thoughts and prayed daily and at end of the summer I received a spiritual answers, "It's true". It was an all summer long process - not just a day or a week. I've had that feeling reinforced many times over the years. That's why I'm a Mormon. I have had the opportunity to serve a mission in northern England in the 60's and learn that God loves everyone, no matter who they are or where they live. I have had the opportunity to serve in the San Diego Temple for the last 10 years and very much love the peaceful spirit there.

How I live my faith

I have worked mostly with 12-18 year old boys, often as their Boy Scout or Varsity Scout leader. I was recently called to serve with older men (45-85 yrs) and I called them my "older scouts". I like going on high adventure activities with 14-18 year olds - mountain hikes & climbing, jumping off cliffs into lakes or skiing down the mountain. I also enjoy the one-on-one visits with members whether it's helping solve some problem or talking or helping put on a new roof. I like hands-on helping of people. I have also given service in my community by serving on civil committees and the elementary school board. I have also participated in international service project of building houses in low income areas in Tijuana Mexico. I current a volunteer serving in the Nauvoo Illinois temple.
