Hi I'm Makayla

I grew up in Alaska commercial fishing with my family. I am now a student at Brigham Young University in Utah. I'm a Mormon!

About Me

I am an average college student. Growing up, I was really into sports and music. I played basketball, volleyball, and ran and threw for track and field all throughout high school. I also was in church choir, school choir, All-State choir, and I play the piano for fun! College has been a blast!! I've been forced to live completely independently, which has been really good for me since I'm planning on serving a full-time mission soon. I also love disney movies and all chick flicks (: I grew up commercial fishing with my family every summer in Alaska since I was little, and I love to be outside!

Why I am a Mormon

I was born and raised in the church, and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! I was blessed with a fabulous family and because of this church I know that I can be with them forever! I will admit that following the principles and doctrines taught at church are hard at times. It was hard going up seeing the kids that I had grown up with start to drink, party, swear, or wear things that I wasn't allowed to. However, I found that I was happiest in life when I was obeying and listening to what my teachers taught me on a weekly basis. I went through a phase in life when I really didn't think I was worth much. I had a hard time seeing myself as special or pretty. I was pretty depressed and down for a while, but I continued to go to church. I would pray and fast for help to know that I was loved by Heavenly Father and that I was special to him. My answer didn't come quickly or as a flash of light or anything like that. It came slowly. My testimony that I was loved by my Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, grew until I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I really am loved by them! Since then, my testimony has grown immensely, especially being here at college. I am planning to serve a full-time mission, and I couldn't be more excited! I want everyone in the world to know that I, Makayla, am a Mormon! I want everyone to understand the happiness and joy that comes through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints! I know that this church is true. I've really always known it's true, which has been an immense blessing in my life! I thank my lucky stars every day that I was born into the true church, Christ's church, on the earth today!

How I live my faith

I love to serve in the church! It sounds cheesy I know, but there really is this awesome feeling you get from serving others! I've participated in my community's ward in multiple ways! When I turned 12, I moved out of the primary (church program for children) and into the Young Women's program (church program for girls 12-18). I was called to be the president of my Young Women class! You can imagine that I felt completely overwhelmed! I was a shy 12 year old, but I figured that if God wanted me to be president of the class, he obviously knew better than I did, so I accepted and went to work. That calling was a HUGE learning experience for me! I gained leadership skills, confidence, and tons of friends. God knew what he was doing when he called me to be the president of my class. Along with that calling, I have been in other presidencies in the church. I was also the ward organist for quite sometime until left for college. Now, I'm the pianist for our college ward's adult women's class (Relief Society). I love the fact that God is allowing me to keep working on my talents by placing me in situations where I can use them on a weekly basis. I know that the skills and characteristics I have learned growing up in the church have really shaped who I am and who I want to be in the future.
