Hi I'm Russ

I'm a chemical engineer who loves basketball, hiking, and cooking. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm currently a PhD student in chemical engineering. I love backpacking, and I'm absolutely crazy about basketball. I've been married and sealed to my lovely wife for three years, and we are preparing for some little ones. I left home at eighteen to go to college. After one year, I served a two-year mission in Sao Paulo, Brazil. While on my mission, I learned that I have bipolar disorder. Coming home, it was very difficult to readjust to college life and dating. I also found that I turned to addictive behaviors to cope with my depressive states. But after lots of difficult times and struggles, I began to rely on Heavenly Father and others for support, including my future wife.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that He atoned for our sins. As I read the word from the Bible and Book of Mormon, and hear the modern prophets, I know that He is the only means by which we can return to live with God and have eternal families. I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is His true church restored to the earth.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by trying to give 100% in my marriage everyday. As a PhD student, I also have the opportunity to teach and tutor undergraduate students. I try to give them the attention and respect that I think the Savior would. In my local congregation, my wife and I teach Sunday School and help the missionaries visit those in the area.

Who was Joseph Smith?

Russ
Joseph Smith was a young boy who grew up in up-state New York during the early 1800's. The are he lived in was going through a period with many, many churches. Many of these churches taught different, and sometimes even contradictory, things about the teachings in the Bible. These differences included the importance of baptism and how baptisms should be performed. Joseph Smith studied these different churches, but in his study he grew no closer to making a decision about any of the churches. Finally he read in the New Testament that if you lack wisdom, you should ask of God. He went into a small grove of trees near his family's farm, and knelt and asked God which of the churches he should join. This 14-year old was told by God and Jesus Christ that he should join none of them, because none of them had a fullness of the truth and lacked the original authority given to the ancient Apostles by Christ. Over the seven or so years after this, the Lord prepared Joseph and others to restore lost truths and reinstate the church of Jesus Christ on the earth. Joseph Smith was the first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ in our era. Show more Show less

Does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse political parties?

Russ
The Church does not endorse specific parties or candidates. Rather, the Church encourages all of its members to diligently study the issues and candidates, and to prayerfully make selections based on the righteous doctrines taught by the Church. Principles compatible to the doctrines of the Gospel may be found in many different politicians or parties. Show more Show less
