Hi I'm John R. Payne

I'm a Mormon and I grew up in Virden, New Mexico. I was adopted at the age of 9 by my parents and I was baptized the next year!

About Me

I grew up in a small town of New Mexico called Virden. I was adopted and brought here by my parents when I was 9. I graduated High School in Duncan, AZ which is about 9 miles from Virden. I played football and track. After High School I went into the U.S. Army for 3 years and one of which I spent in Vietnam. I later went on a mission to Texas San Antonio. Then I got married and went back into the Army and finished up my 20 years. I worked in the Intelligence field and my specialty was Security. I retired as a Warrant Officer and went back home and settled in Arizona. That is where I spent the next 15 years working in corrections. Of that time I spent 4 years as a corrections officer and then I promoted to Corrections Officer III (counselor). I had to move to Florence, Az and started working in the Super Max unit and worked with the inmates on Death Row for 3 years, and I spent 2 years on another section. Then I was transferred to Cook and Rynning units where I spent my last 4 years. On August 2010 I got a call from my mother saying she needed me to come home and help her with my dad that was getting on in years and was not able to do for himself any more. So, I took an early retirement to help my mother assist my dad and her in their declining years. I am so glad I took the early retirement because they both passed on in the next 3 years. So, we decided to go on a mission now that I am not caring for my parents anymore. I do miss my parents more than I had ever imagined.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I believe with all of my heart that it is the true church of Jesus Christ on the earth. Plain and simple, it helps me avoid sin. Without the church I feel like I would not have an anchor in life.

How I live my faith

I was baptized when I was 10 years of age. I went to Seminary in the early morning hours before High School. I spent 2 years on a church mission. These events all assisted me in living my religion. Right now in my Ward I am a Leader of the 11 year old Scouts. I spend time reading the Bible, Book of Mormon, and other scriptures and listening to church leaders.
