Hi I'm Sharon

I'm Deaf and I'm a Mormon. I'm also a teacher, Mom, and Grandma

About Me

I'm the oldest of 7 children. I became Deaf when I was 5 years old. I attended Gallaudet University and learned American Sign Language there. That's also where I became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. One member introduced me to the church by asking me: " What's your picture of God?" 9 months later, I was baptized! A year later I was married. I love teaching and have taught Deaf children and college students. I love sewing, especially breastfeeding covers and used them for my 7 children as well as giving them to friends and family members.

Why I am a Mormon

That question: "What's your picture of God?" is what lead me to learning more about the Mormons. At the time, I was studying different churches and thought that since the Catholics were here longer that maybe that was the true church. However, the more I asked questions like "3 in 1 Godhead", I couldn't get a satisfactory answer from other churches but the Mormons explained it so clearly, that I knew I was getting the answers I needed to hear. Baptism was another question, I couldn't understand why some babies went to hell and others were saved. Why there were so many different kinds of baptism like sprinkling, pouring water, immersion, or just saved by faith. Once I learned about baptism by immersion by those with proper priesthood authority and the example set by Jesus Christ, it all fell into place. However, I had a problem accepting modern day prophet Joseph Smith. I had to find out for myself if the Book of Mormon was true. I decided to read the Book of Mormon and within 3 weeks when I completed the book, I knew without a doubt that the Book of Mormon was true. If the Book of Mormon was true, then Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. I love the Plan of Salvation: This tells me where I came from, why I'm here on earth, and where I go after death. I'm still learning and I'm enriched by my learning experience. I love this Church. I love my past and living prophets. The church has blessed my marriage and my children. My life is so much better because I became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

How I live my faith

I love attending church on Sundays. I like hearing the talks. I have taught Sunday school to children, lessons to women, written articles for our church newsletter. I work with people on their family history in our church family history library. The church has given me lots of leadership position. I also teach American Sign Language so members can communicate with me. I have helped with emergency preparation displays and preparations. I love learning about food storage and going to the food storehouse to help others.
