Hi I'm Heather Smurthwaite

I grew up in California. I graduated from BYU, married, and brought 10 children into the world. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a 72 year-old woman, happily temple married for 51 years. We have 10 children (all our own, whom we love dearly and admire greatly), and many grandchildren and at this point some great grandchildren. We hold family reunions regularly, and rejoice in our posterity. I am an enthusiast of physical health, and an earnest seeker of spiritual health. I try to live all that I learn in these areas. I love to read historical fiction. I love all the arts. Over time I have gained skill in all the homemaking arts, and especially enjoy gardening and sewing and do-it-yourself repairs. I have a talent for organizing. Recently I have fallen in love with family history work, and have compiled and written life histories of a number of my ancestors. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in the temple and serving LDS missions with my beloved husband, and we are now embarking on an MLS mission in our stake here where we live. I am a very happy woman.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born in the Church to a wonderful LDS mother, and sealed in the temple to a righteous LDS stepfather, who raised me faithfully in the doctrines and practices of the Gospel. I always believed the Church was true, but I wanted to KNOW it was true, so, as a teenager I carefully read the Book of Mormon, pleading with the Lord to know for myself if it was true. My prayer was answered by a powerful witness to my whole being by the Holy Ghost that yes, this was true! I have never forgotten the feeling and power of that marvelous witness. My whole soul felt like it was filled with warm, comforting fire! I knew then that I would forever be faithful to the Lord and the truth and His Church.

How I live my faith

I have held many callings in all the auxiliary organizations of the Church, both teaching and administrating, since I was 16 years old. I have enjoyed and worked earnestly and enjoyed every one of them. Except when serving full-time missions, I have always filled the calling of Visiting Teacher to the best of my ability. What a blessing that the Lord lets us participate! I also live my faith by praying daily, reading and studying the scriptures, holding Family Home Evenings (especially when our children were in the home), attending Church, attending the temple, and counseling prayerfully with my husband. These practices have brought rich and powerful blessings to my life.

What do Mormons believe about family?

Heather Smurthwaite
Families are part of Heavenly Father's plan of salvation for His Children. This is how we get to earth, this is how we are taught basic truths, how we learn to regard ourselves and relate to each other, and how to love. Families are our basic setting for happiness. Show more Show less
