Hi I'm Derek Smith

I grew up in Colorado Springs, CO. I was the Student Body President of my hs. I went to BYU Provo for a semester. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the second oldest in my family, with one older brother and two younger sisters. I played basketball and golf in high school and love most sports. I was golf captain of my team and won golfer of the year for my high school. My basketball team also went to the state Final Four for the first tome in school history. I was also active in Student Council, becoming the Student Body President my senior year. I was able to go to BYU Provo on a scholarship for academics and attended a semester. While there I got my mission call to Brazil Santa Maria and will be learning the Portuguese language.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have come to know Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ's love for me by living the gospel of Jesus Christ. I know that they organized this church so that we may become like them through obedience and service to others, and that only through Jesus Christ can we return to live with them again. I have seen the happiness I can receive by living their commandments, and I have also seen the pain and sorrow I can avoid by doing the things they have asked us to do through this church. It isn't easy to be a Mormon, and I know we all mess up in trying to do what is right, but I know this church can help you in your path to a change of heart and of action. It brings out the best in people, and the feelings you get from living the way God would have us are undeniable. It truly is the true church of Christ, and I know that for myself. It has taken sometime to receive my answer, and some trials to grow from, but there is nothing in this world that will bring more joy than following the teachings of Jesus Christ. He knows me personally, and is there every step of the way to help me and to help you. I know there is a prophet on the earth today, that receives guidance from God and leads the church in the direction it should be. The peace I feel and you can as well listening to the prophet and his apostles brings an assurance that this Church is true and good.

How I live my faith

When I was at BYU for college I had the opportunity to be a leader over Family Home Evening, which allowed all members of our congregation to meet each other and have a close group they could hang out with and do fun things with every Monday night. I also was able to teach a class of two year olds about God and families, which I loved. I have organized food drives for people in need as well as worked at the Storehouse for the church to help those in need of food. I also go once a month to visit families in my congregation to make sure they are doing ok and offer my services to them if ever needed, whether that be service or dinners, or somebody to talk to.
