Hi I'm Ilene Kinghorn

I'm a Suzuki violin and viola teacher. I have lived in New York City, Detroit, Houston and Salt Lake. I love being a Mormon.

About Me

Have you had a running hug from a grandchild? It is one of my sweetest joys! I love reading to or playing games with my grandchildren. All of our children and their spouses and our grandchildren gathered at a mountain condo for a reunion this summer. We swam, hiked, played Twister and limbo. We had so much fun all 19 of us playing "sardines" in the condo. It's the opposite of hide and seek: one person hides and everyone looks for them. When you find them, you squeeze in and hide with them. Building family relationships is very important to me. Have you worn a cap and gown in a graduation ceremony? I went back to college in my 50's and earned a degree in violin performance. I played a solo Senior Recital and finished the hardest theory classes I have ever taken. It felt so satisfying! Our church encourages education. Do you like to read? I read the scriptures each day for the peace, happiness and direction it gives me. I also enjoy novels. Two of my favorite books are "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austin. I like surprise endings such as in "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and honest and good heroes like Jean Valjean in Victor Hugo "Les Miserables". I love to read.

Why I am a Mormon

What do I love about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints? I love having living prophets. They give wise counsel for every part of my life, spiritual, emotional, physical, and financial. For example, when I was a young mother, a former church leader, N Eldon Tanner taught, "We need love the most when we deserve it the least." That helped me work through challenges in our family. Our recent prophet, Gordon B Hinckley, taught us to get out of debt. My husband and I paid off all our loans. That has brought great peace of mind! But most of all, I love knowing that our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, suffered for our sins. I know that he loves every one of us individually. He delights in blessing each one of us as we obey His commandments.

How I live my faith

I taught the sweet pre-teen girls (10-12 years) in church for many years. We would have singing time and a short lesson with all the children 8-12, then I taught my seven girls in a small classroom. We had a really good discussion this year when we studied Abraham being willing to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. The girls are really smart and said, "Wow, how did Abraham prepare to sacrifice Isaac? That would have been so hard!" They understood how faithful and good Abraham was. I loved working with these girls! Now, I'm preparing to serve full time as a missionary! My husband and I will be working in the mission office in Sydney, Australia. We are making our own sacrifice, leaving our 4 children and their spouses and our 9 precious grandchildren.
