Hi I'm Derrik Holden

I'm from St. Johns, Arizona serving a mission in Alberta, Canada. I love, family, friends, sports, and outdoors. I'm a Mormon!!

About Me

I am 19 years old. My favorite things to do are play sports or any activity that involves working out. I am the second of 4 children. I am the only one out of my family to go on a mission. We are all members of the church but I felt I needed to act on that. Our family was less-active in the church for a long time. I always knew that something was missing from my life. As I began going back to church with my grandparents, I felt the need of the Gospel in my life. I was filled with all the joy that had been missing from my life. I started to delight in keeping the Sabbath day holy. So now, church is something I hold very dear to my heart. It is where I can be to feel safe, happy, loved, etc. It is the place where I have grown into who I am.

Why I am a Mormon

Why am I a Mormon? That is a question I have always asked myself. I'm sure other members have wondered the same thing. Just like non-members, we too must know for ourselves if what the church offers is true. I felt going into my senior year of high school that I sincerely needed to know. I was about to go out into the world knowing nothing of who I really am. It all began with a question: Is this true? Now that I knew what I needed to find out, I had to put it into action. I began reading from the Book of Mormon. There was much stuff that stuck out to me that didn't make sense. I would pray to understand what that meant. I received an answer of what it says and then was just, "OK, cool." I would keep reading without realizing what just happened. It would happen again and again. Finally it hit me. My father in Heaven just talked to me! I was so excited! I then finally asked if this is the true church and that the Book of Mormon is the true word of God. The answer I received was powerful, simple, and straightforward. The answer I received was: Yes. That was all it was but I knew instantly at that moment that it really was. I began returning to church. I began to feel happy. Now to answer the question, "Why am I a Mormon?" It makes me such a happy person. I know that we a have a Father in Heaven who lives and talks to us. He wants us to feel joy. The Gospel gives us what he wants for us. It gives us truth, light, enrichment. I can say with all honesty and complete faith, that I do belong to the most true church on the earth. That is why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I often teach our youth the lessons in Sunday school. There is nothing more exciting than being able to help our youth grow into strong men and women. When I look at them I see me at that age. I see all the things I should have done better at the age. I want them to be the best they can be, so they can be what God wants them to be. There are many service projects that I try to participate in. Doing service for others is one of the greatest things anyone could do. Charity is the pure love of Christ. Ye can do nothing without charity is what He taught. One of my callings in my ward before I left for my mission was as a ward missionary. We act as missionaries in out ward and teach the after baptism lessons mostly. It is one of the best callings I have ever received. I got a real feel of what a missionary does and it made me realize that going on a mission was exactly what I want to do. I was also a temple worker in the Snowflake Arizona Temple. There is no greater feeling than the feeling I get when I enter into the house of the Lord. Getting the opportunity to be an ordinance worker made me almost jump for joy. I got to do service for others in the most holy place on Earth! There are many activities and events that I help plan for the youth such as dances, games, etc. One of the best ways I feel I can live my faith is to just be an example. One of the leaders of our church, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf once said in a talk, "We must preach the Gospel at all times and, when necessary, use words." Once people see how truly happy I am they start to wonder what I have. Being a good example to others is one of the most important ways members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints can live their faith. That is who we are and how we live.

What is the purpose of the welfare services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

Derrik Holden
The welfare services of the church are pretty amazing. It provides food, water, school supplies, helps out with disaster victims. It is really a program that helps people who can't do it all by themselves, kinda to help them stay on their feet. The church's welfare program donates to programs all over the world and helps all who need it. Show more Show less

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Derrik Holden
The atonement of Jesus Christ is 3 main events. The first event that took place was when Christ had gone to the Garden of Gethsemane. It was here that he prayed up unto the Lord and took upon the sins of the world. He had bled from every pore of his body. The second event that took place was when He had died on the cross. Most people have heard of this part before. But the most important event to take place in all the world, was when Jesus Christ had overcame death. He rose on the third day. There is no other name for which we could be saved. As Christ took upon himself the sins of the world, it wasn't just that moment. All who were, are, and are to come have the opportunity to be saved through God's grace. He made it possible for us to make mistakes and then to have those mistakes forgiven and made right. We all have the chance to overcome death just as Christ had done. We too can rise from the grave and receive a perfected body just as our Savior, Jesus Christ had done. The Atonement means so much to me. Through the Atonement I know I will be cleansed of all unrighteousness. It is through the Atonement that I will be able to stand spotless before God at the last day. No other person except Jesus Christ could have made this possible for not just me but all mankind. Many of us think that because of what He did, we will never be enough to repay the debt. But the thing that everyone doesn't understand is that Christ did not ask us to repay him. He asked us to follow him. Show more Show less
