Hi I'm Marissa

I grew up in Washington State. I am a college student. I work as a dog groomer. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in the vibrant green Pacific Northwest for a majority of my life. After graduating high school I moved to Utah to attend college. I originally studied Mathematics, looking to pursue a career as a teacher. After a family trip to Asia in 2012, I decided to change my major and my life plans. Instead of math, a subject I enjoy, I decided to pursue something I am truly passionate about. Now I will be graduating with a degree in Asian Studies with an emphasis in Korean and a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language. Many ask me what my plans are with such an obscure degree and I tell them that I want to live in South Korea and teach English. But in all honestly I do not know what will happen. All I know is that this is what I'm supposed to be doing. In addition to being a student, I work as a dog groomer at a small salon. I enjoy the challenge and reward that comes with working closely with animals, as they've always held a special place in my heart. Life at the salon is a microcosm of our own world--it's fascinating to work on a small scale with such varying personalities. Believe it or not, but each dog has a unique character. I just love my job! In 2015 I was called to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Korea, perhaps giving me an explanation for my chosen degree. This is a testament to me that God is real, He knows each of us, and has a plan for us.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon not just because I was born into the church, but because I believe it to be true. My conversion has been a gradual one, much like the process of the sun rising. There were definite ah-ha moments where I suddenly had my testimony strengthened, but overall it's something I've been working on my entire life. Let me tell you it is real. The gospel works. I've felt such peace and joy in my life that I haven't felt any other place. God is real. He loves us. In fact, He loves us so much that He sent His son as part of a plan to allow us to find true joy. Jesus Christ is God's son who came to the Earth. Through His Atonement, we are able to repent of our sins and change. God also loves us so much that He provided a source for us to learn His teachings--the scriptures. I know that both the Bible and the Book of Mormon to be true. They are ancient records of God's prophets. God also loves us so much that He provides modern prophets to guide and direct us. I know that Joseph Smith was called of God to restore the Gospel to the earth, and that he was also called to translate the Book of Mormon to make God's teachings available to the world. I know that President Thomas S. Monson is our modern prophet today. I know these things to be true because I have studied and prayed to know. It works! I found something that works and I want to share it with others!

How I live my faith

At my church I was asked to play the piano for our sacrament meetings, and also choir. Being a person who gets the nerves quite easily, at first I found it difficult to play so publicly. Time and time again I found the courage to conquer my fears, and now I absolutely love it! I am currently devoting my life to serve Jesus Christ as a missionary in South Korea.
