Hi I'm Randy

I'm a statistician. I'm a cellist. I'm a husband. I'm a father of four. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love learning. I generally have several books I'm reading at any given time. I'm currently learning about homeschooling with my wife and how to best help my kids love to learn. My four kids (ages two to eight years old) keep me busy and give me a fresh perspective on life. I've been out of collage and in a career for several years now and I'm enjoying this stage of my life.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in the church, but when I was 17 I wanted to know for myself whether the things I had been taught by my parents and at church were really true or whether they were just our traditions. There is an oft quoted scripture at the end of The Book of Mormon that says that if you read and study the book and pray with faith to know whether it's true that Heavenly Father will tell you by the power of the Holy Ghost. It further says that through the Holy Ghost you can know the truth of all things. I decided to follow that challenge. I read the Book of Mormon all the way through and then prayed to know if it was really true: if Joseph Smith was really a prophet, if there was really a living prophet leading the church, if the church was really the only true church. I believe I prayed with faith that night, expecting an answer, but I felt no different after I prayed. I believed in God and so over the next few weeks I continued to ask God in prayer if it was true. Then one day while I was preparing a talk for Seminary graduation, it hit me. In an instant I had a flood of memories wash over my mind where I had felt the Holy Ghost testify to me about the Book of Mormon, about Joseph Smith, the Sacrament, the current prophet, and the church as a whole. God answered my many prayers that it was all true, and that He had already told me many times before.

How I live my faith

I love serving in my ward. I'm currently working as a councilor to the Bishop. Working with him, seeking the Lord's guidance and confirmation about who should be asked to teach, lead, or give sermons in the church has confirmed to me that this is Christ's church. I also love how following our Prophet's council has helped me become a better father. I try to make sure my wife and I pray morning and night with our kids as a family. We also read our scriptures a little every day together as a family. We schedule Monday nights to be together as a family. All of these are little things that have been recommended by our prophets over the years. With young children, my wife and I have to be creative, but I have already seen the fruits of our effort as my kids have tought me simple truths. It's a wonderful thing to feel the Holy Ghost bear witness of the truth as I talk to my kids about what we are reading in the scriptures, and then to see and feel their excitement as I point it out to them and they too recognize it.
